eFootball PES 2020: Reviewing the European National Legends in PES

Konami has rolled out an update to bring back European National Team Legends in eFootball PES 2020 as a part of the UEFA EURO 2020 mode. The new update has refreshed some life into the PES veterans. Legends from European National Teams have been introduced in the game in a Special Agent Coin Draw. Though, the whole PES Mobile fans hoped to obtain such National Legends in PES via GP Box Draws. PES 2020 has given players every chance to farm as much GP as possible. But the wait for a Legends Box Draw does extend more.

Some of the greatest players to grace the game have been introduced in PES 2020 for the very first time. It also presents many people the opportunity to earn the old legends which many fans waited for a long time. As we get into the game and spend our coins and try to get players like Van Basten and Carles Puyol, we dive into the reviews of the newly introduced National Legends in PES 2020.

Forwards

Marco Van-Basten (CF)

National Legends in PES Van Basten
Van Basten

Playing Style: Fox in the Box

The Dutch superstar is one of the best additions in the game in the Euro Update. Marco Van Basten takes up fantastic positions behind the defence and rarely makes an offside run. He has almost the perfect runs and is one of the most lethal finishers in-game. Van Basten’s ball control can be clumsy, though he is your man to win over defensive duels. The Swan of Utrecht can stay on the ball and take it past the strongest of defenders and win battles on strength. He is a fantastic goalscorer and can link-up play with the advancing wingers or strike-partners as well.

Best formations to use in: He is quite useful alongside a Target Man in 4-3-1-2 formation of G. Henriques. You can use him in a two-CF formation with partner with good passing stats in Fernando Santos’s 4-3-1-2 or C.Valbeuna’s 4-2-2-2. He can also play in a one CF formation in 4-2-3-1 or L.Roman’s/ Y. Grimault 4-3-3.

Filippo Inzaghi (CF)

Inzaghi PES
Inzaghi

Playing Style: Goal Poacher

One of the best super-subs in-game with the ‘Super-Sub’ trait, Pipo can latch onto long balls in the box with excellent Offensive Awareness. He can link up with defenders. The Italian has great speed and acceleration to take on defenders. He has great heading against defenders. Inzaghi has good stamina to press against midfielders for the whole 90 minutes of the game. He has decent weak foot usage rating of 4.

Best formations to use in: He can be paired with a Hole Player or a Target Man, having good passing stats in Fernando Santos’s 4-3-1-2 or C.Valbuena’s 4-2-2-2.

Fernando Morientes (CF)

Morientes
Morientes

Playing Style: Fox in the Box

The Real Madrid superstar is a striker who can tussle with defenders, finish in tight spaces and has good pressing abilities to charge a loose ball. Morientes is a fantastic super-sub and can link up well with a striker beside him. He has excellent offensive awareness and has good tight possession to hold the ball. Adding to that, He has great heading capabilities.

Fernando Torres (CF)

Torres PES
Fernando Torres

Playing Style: Goal Poacher

The National legends version of the Spanish forward is one of the prolific strikers who has arrived with this update in PES. He is brilliant in getting the shot away in and around the box and makes intelligent runs past defenders and has exciting pace on the ball. El Nino has fantastic link-up play and can hold up the ball and dribble easily past the best of defenders. Torres has good stamina which can be useful for pressing defenders too.

Best formations to use in: He can be paired with a hole player or a target man, having good passing stats in Fernando Santos’s 4-3-1-2 or C.Valbuena’s 4-2-2-2. You can also play him in L.Roman’s 4-3-3 or Y.Grimault’s 4-1-2-3.

Michael Owen (CF)

Owen

Playing Style: Goal Poacher

The English striker makes a comeback as one of the National Legends to PES after being one of the most loved players last year. Our high expectations on the former Liverpool striker does disappoint a bit. Owen is incredibly fast and has good offensive awareness to latch on any balls played to him and has fantastic finishing on the top of it. His downside is the fact that he can be pushed off the ball easily, owing to his less physical contact.

Jan Koller (CF)

Koller
Koller

Playing Style: Target Man

The Czech forward is one of the decent National legends added in PES who can head the ball well due to his Heading trait. He has great finishing (91) and offensive awareness to take his shots well. He has great strength (99 Physical Contact) to hold off defenders, but does not have great ball control and loses the ball easily.

Best formations to use in:  You can use him in a two-CF formation with partner with good passing stats in Fernando Santos’s 4-3-1-2 or C.Valbeuna’s 4-2-2-2.

Dennis Bergkamp (SS)

National Legends in PES:Bergkamp
Bergkamp

Playing Style: Creative Playmaker

The Arsenal legend is one of the best playmakers in-game and can play as an AMF or SS in the field of play where he can link up with the forwards and has fantastic shooting abilities when he makes those brilliant intelligent runs past defenders. Bergkamp can dribble past defenders and provide great through balls for goal poachers to finish off. He has a wonderful set of skills of Through passing and One Touch Pass which can help him dominate the play up front.

Best formations to use in: He could also play as a false-9 CF in G.Zietler‘s 4-3-3. For possession managers such as Luis Enrique and L.Roman, he could make the lives of opponents harder in a left-wide SS. He will be much more fruitful in counter-attacking formations of P.Boer’s 4-2-3-1, Y. Grimault‘s 4-1-2-3 and a central SS in Fernando Santos’s 4-3-1-2.

Midfielders

T. Rosicky (AMF)

Rosicky
Rosicky

Playing Style: Classic No. 10

The Czech midfielder has decent ball control and dribbling stats along with great passing qualities to provide through balls which makes him a great playmaker. He can take great set pieces, but you need to manually push him forward because of his playstyle. His physical contact is not great and thus tends to give away possession against the strongest of DMF’s or CB’s.

Best formations to use in:  He is best suited for the left AMF position in 4-1-2-3(Ex: L. Roman) or as a sole AMF in 4-2-3-1(Ex: D. Deschamps).

Andres Iniesta (CMF)

Iniesta
Iniesta

Playing Style: Hole Player

The former Barcelona midfielder is one of the smoothest players with the ball stitched to his feet. He is one of the best hole players in the game who can make late runs in the box, to offer maximum offensive pressure. He has top-notch passing and crossing stats and can get past defenders with ease. Fantastic positioning and classy through balls can help him break the defence, but does not have ample strength to win defensive duels.

Best formations to use in: Iniesta performs greatly in an AMF position in the 4-2-1-3 of P.Boer or 4-1-2-3(4-3-3 variant) of L.Roman. He can be properly used as a CMF in the 4-3-3 counter-attacking formations of Y. Grimault or R.Koeman or the 4-1-2-3 (4-3-3 variant) of G.Southgate.

Xavi (CMF)

National Legends in PES:Xavi
Xavi

Playing Style: Orchestrator

The Spanish pass master is one of the best orchestrators in-game who has arguably the best passing stats in the game. He can pick wingers and strikers perfectly on the break by long balls and play short passes in the midfield to keep possession. The former Barcelona midfielder has brilliant close control and dribbling to stay behind in the pitch where his shooting qualities don’t get utilised. He can also track back to cover the counter-attacking players. Lots of skill moves and traits like Through Passing and Weighted Pass help him in the distribution in the midfield and also find quick attackers on the break.

Best formations to use in: He can also function as a CMF in the two-midfield pivot of C. Valbuena’s 4-2-2-2 or Hansi Flick’s 4-2-3-1 or P.Boer’s 4-2-1-3 alongside a Destroyer preferably because of Xavi’s low defensive stats as a DMF. In case of a 4-3-3 formation of Y. Grimault or Quique Setien, you can also play Xavi as a left CMF.

Frank Lampard (CMF)

Lampard

Playing Style: Hole Player

Frank Lampard is a great Hole Player who makes fantastic runs into the box with absolutely brilliant shot power and finishing. The current Chelsea manager isn’t the best of dribblers and gets beaten in counter-attacks in pace. Frank excels in passing and can find the fast attacker with pinpoint long balls. He is literally everywhere on the pitch and has excellent 95 stamina who can press brilliantly.

Best Formations to use in: Lampard can be properly used as a CMF in the 4-3-3 counter-attacking formations of Y. Grimault or R.Koeman or the 4-1-2-3 (4-3-3 variant) of G.Southgate.

David Beckham (RMF)

Beckham

Playing Style: Cross Specialist

The newer version of Beckham which has arrived to the game is easily much better in-game than the earlier one. Beckham has wonderful shooting stats along with crossing abilities. The former England captain can play down the middle and cut to the right flank to whip in crosses for the strikers to head in. He has wonderful free-kicks down his sleeve and is lethal for set-pieces. He can score from long-rangers and hit beautiful curlers. Beckham can take on defenders and beat them on pace, but does not have the best of dribbling. He is everywhere on the pitch and supports in defensive work-rate.

Best Formations to use in: Beckham can play easily in the RMF/RWF position in 4-2-2-2 of C. Valbuena or 4-2-3-1 of D.Deschamps where he can cross the ball in the box for the striker’s headers. Becks can additionally play in the AMF position of 4-3-3 of L. Roman or 4-3-1-2 of Fernando Santos where he can play down the middle and put in perfect long or through balls for strikers to finish up.

Frank Rijkaard (DMF)

National Legends in PES:Riijkard
Rijkaard

Playing Style: Orchestrator

The Dutch defensive midfielder is very critical in retaining possession for the team and is tall to intercept long balls played to attackers. He has great long-range shots down his sleeve due to the Long-Range shooting and Rising shots trait. He is everywhere in the pitch and serves a perfect foil for the likes of destroyers like Viera or Kante. The Black Swan is phenomenal with his positioning and can play fantastic long balls to attackers.

Best formations to use in: He can also function as a DMF in the two-midfield pivot of C. Valbuena’s 4-2-2-2 or Hansi Flick’s 4-2-3-1 or P.Boer’s 4-2-1-3 alongside a Destroyer preferably because of Rijkaard’s low defensive stats as a DMF. In case of a 4-3-3 formation of Y. Grimault or Quique Setien, you can also play Rijkaard as a left CMF.

Defenders

Carles Puyol (CB)

Puyol
Puyol

Playing Style: Destroyer

The Spanish Center-back has outstanding work-rate and can hold onto attackers with his aggression and stamina. He should not be forced out of position to press which creates gaps in the defence. He is a fantastic ball-winner and times his tackles to perfection. Puyol, due to the Heading trait has a good presence in the air. The former Barcelona captain can pick attackers on the break with precision due to the Long Ball Expert trait.

Best formations to use in: He needs to be played along with a Build-up CB who can distribute where Puyol can be the strong leader in defence. The formations where he can thrive are L.Roman’s 4-1-2-3 or Quique Setien’s 4-3-3.

B. Lizarazu (LB)

National Legends in PES:Lizarazu
Lizarazu

Playing Style: Offensive Fullback

The French left-back does a decent job in both attack and defence and is a good alternative to have in your gold-ball and legend teams if you do not have a fullback. He has a good amount of pace to push up the pitch and put in crosses or passes into the half. He has excellent stamina to charge and press the opposition throughout the pitch. His Interception and Acrobatic Clear skill help him to defend well in case of long balls.

Best formations to use in:  he is vital in formations of 4-1-2-3 of L.Roman or 4-3-3 of G.Zeitler where fullbacks operate higher up the pitch and can drop back equally quickly. He can also work as an LMF in the formation of 4-3-1-2 of N.Manalt or Fernando Santos.

Petr Cech (GK)

Cech
Cech

Playing Style: Defensive GK

He is a defensive goalkeeper who is great in All-Out-Defence formations as he does stick to his lines while defending. He has the Low Punt skill which is very effective in distribution. Petr Cech has got the quickest of reflexes as a goalkeeper. He can effectively stop shots due to fantastic GK Reach and has brilliant positioning due to GK awareness. The problem occurs in the case of Frontline Pressure formations where he is not quick to come off his lines to clear the danger.

Best formations to use in: Defensive GK’s find their use for managers in the All-out-defence tactic. Managers include M.Sarri’s 4-3-3 and C.Ranieri’s 4-2-22.

Iker Casillas (GK)

National Legends in PES:Casillas
Casillas

Playing Style: Offensive GK

Casillas has been very underwhelming despite the hype around him. The former Spanish Captain has been very inconsistent in coming off his lines being an Offensive Keeper. He has been pretty good in stopping the shots aimed at him and great in quick reflex actions. The former Madrid keeper should be trained with a GK Low Punt skill which helps with distribution in Frontline Pressure formations.

Best formations to use in: Offensive GK’s find their place for managers in the Frontline Pressure tactic. Managers include L.Enrique’s 4-3-3 and D.Millesi’s 4-2-2-2.
