Epic Games Store to arrive on mobile devices

Following Fortnite Mobile‘s success, Epic hopes to bring the Epic Games Store on mobile devices, for both Android and iOs. Epic made quite a few ripples when it opened its digital game store. Standing toe to toe against gaming PC gaming behemoth Steam, it’s reeling in droves of gamers daily by offering a free game every week for four weeks now.

Interview with the Epic CEO

GameSpot conducted an interview with the Epic CEO Tim Sweeney during the site’s Play For All summer gaming event. Gamespot asked him about any future plans he had for the Epic Games Store, to which Sweeney responded:

We’d like to bring the Store to iOS in the future, and we will bring it to Android. We think it’s a good way to help the industry forward and it’s another way where Epic as a game developer had built up this audience around Fortnite and learned how to operate a distribution platform on PC and Android. Now, as we’ve done with many things from the Unreal Engine to the Epic Online services, we open it up to all other developers to use with their games and are trying to serve the industry and provide a really interesting alternative to the ecosystem.

This isn’t Epic’s first discussion of bringing the EGS to mobile devices. In an interview with Game Informer, Sweeney talked about bringing the EGS to PC and Mac in 2018 and Android and iOS later in 2019.

The future of Mobile Gaming

Tim Sweeney has heavily criticized both Google and Apple for their revenue cuts back when Epic launched Fortnite Mobile.

The 30 percent store tax is a high cost in a world where game developers’ 70 percent must cover all the cost of developing, operating, and supporting their games…There’s a rationale for this on the console where there’s an enormous investment in hardware, often sold below cost and marketing campaigns in broad partnership with publishers…30 percent is disproportionate to the cost of the services these stores perform, such as payment processing, download bandwidth, and customer service.

Google characterizes 3rd party software sources as malware. Through repetitive security pop-ups, Google discourages users to obtain software outside the Google Play store. Epic’s clear intention is to drive the gaming industry forward by breaking down the platform barriers. This could bring games unreleased on the current mobile platforms, or games downloaded from other third parties to more players from the easy access of one app.

Cheaply made clone games have flooded the mobile gaming platforms with monetization at the centre. If Epic Games can attract more developers, this could greatly improve the variety of games on mobile platforms.
