India banned 59 Chinese apps including Mobile Legends and Clash of Kings

The Government of India today finally banned a total of 59 Chinese mobile apps including Mobile Legends and Clash of Kings. The Govt. termed these apps as prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity, security of the state and public order. This move from the Government was being anticipated from a long time ago, after the clash between both countries at the Galwan Valley on June 15 which led to 20 Indian soldiers losing their lives.

The official statement from Govt. of India

The Ministry of Electronics & IT announced the statement of the ban on 59 apps on their social media with a press release from the Press Information Bureau.

Ministry of Electronics & IT’s official tweet

Why the Chinese apps are being banned in India?

In the official press release, Govt. said that they have received numerous complaints from various sources about the misuse of these apps on both android and iOs platforms for ‘stealing and transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers located outside India‘. They also said that “there has been a strong chorus in the public space to take strict action against Apps that harm India’s sovereignty as well as the privacy of our citizens”.

PIB’s official statement about the incident:

This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace. Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre sent an exhaustive recommendation for blocking these malicious apps.

Which apps will be banned?

Will PUBG Mobile be banned in India?

PUBG Mobile, the Battle Royale game from Chinese publishers Tencent is no doubt the most popular Chinese game in India right now, with Tencent Games earning millions of profit from the Indian gaming industry each day. Although many Chinese games and apps are being banned in India, it’s of little surprise to see PUBG Mobile missing from the list.

PUBG Mobile currently has a huge craze in India, with the Indian eSports industry depending on it heavily. So banning PUBG Mobile could result in advert effects. Also, the Govt. said they were only banning those apps against which they received complaints from various sources, and it’s very normal that not many people complained against PUBG Mobile. So we still don’t think PUBG will be banned in India anytime soon.

Final thoughts

There have been recent movements like #BanChineseProducts and #BoycottMadeInChina on social media, where people from different communities raised voice against completely banning Chinese apps, games and other products as well. Finally the Govt. has responded to these movements today. While it’s good to see that the centre is taking necessary steps to tighten the security of the citizens, the Mobile Legends and Clash of Kings players will certainly be disappointed with the news.
