Indian Army has asked all its personnel to delete 89 apps including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, PUBG Mobile, and all Tencent games as per the report shared by news agency ANI. Major games like Clash of Kings and Mobile Legends are also included in the list. The news has come after the Indian government decided to ban 59 Chinese apps following the deadly clash between Indian and Chinese armies at Galway Valley, which China claimed as its territory.
The official report that Indian Army asked its personnel to delete 89 apps from their smartphones came today but it is not clear as to when the order was originally passed. Because there are many apps which are already banned by the Indian Government like Tiktok, Mobile Legends & Clash of Kings.
News agency ANI tweeted a photograph with the title, ‘Social Media Apps: Banned for Usage with the list of the apps. This is possibly the first time that dating apps like Tinder, Happn, Woo as well as news apps like Daily Hunt and all private blogs have also been banned.
Why did the Indian Army decide to ban these apps?
According to media reports, the army wants all its personnel to delete these apps to plug the leakage of information. The inclusion of dating apps also suggests that the army isn’t just anxious about online leaks, but also real-world snooping. Governments’ concern was the collection and unauthorized sending of user data outside India. The ban from the Indian army also more or less seems to touch the same issue.
There is a large overlap if you match the list of apps banned by the Indian army with that of 59 Chinese apps banned by the Government of India. The only difference being, this list is even larger and isn’t restricted to only apps from China. Army has asked its personnel to delete most popular apps like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Reddit.
The ban is seen in relation to the tensions that are building up between India and China. But unlike the government list, this ban will only apply to the 13-lakh Army personnel.
