Mojang Studios to shut down Minecraft Earth from June 31, 2021

Farewell, Minecraft Earth

Minecraft Earth, the multiplayer experience we grew to love, is going away forever. Mojang Studios announced the Minecraft Earth shut down in a recent announcement. Bringing together players far and wide since it’s inception in December 2019, Minecraft Earth has turned our world into a video game and offered countless players the opportunity to put a beloved game and universe directly in front of our guys via the miracle that is AR. Players around the world shuttered today at this news, and we are saddened to see it go, as well. This news comes after Microsoft announced another mobile game of theirs, Gears Pop to discontinue from April 26th, 2021.

When will the game shutdown?

While Mojang delivered the crushing blow today, you still have until June 2021 to experience the beauty of transforming your surroundings with 8-bit blocks.

Minecraft Earth Shut down

From June 30th, all content and support for the game will be deleted and you won’t be able to play anymore. That being said, Mojang has stated that they will be adding a final update to the game that will include the following:

  • Removing real-money transactions
  • Drastically reducing ruby costs
  • Including all completed, unreleased content currently in their pipeline
  • Reducing time requirements for crafting and smelting
  • Replacing unused crafting & smelting boosts with radius boosts of the same level
  • Granting a set of Character Creator items to players who sign in between January 5th and June 30th

Future of in-app spendings

If you’ve put real-life money into the game, you don’t have to worry that you’ve wasted it on a game that won’t exist anymore. Any money that you’ve spent on your ruby balance will be converted to Minecoins that allow you to make purchases on the Minecraft Marketplace (from the real version of Minecraft). Even if you haven’t put any money into Minecraft Earth, you’ll still be given a free download of the Bedrock version of Minecraft, in case you wanted to give the real game a try to satiate your urge to break and build.

Why will Minecraft Earth shut down?

The game entirely depends upon collaboration and mobility. With the ongoing pandemic situation, it is quite impossible for players to play the game. And also it is becoming harder on part of the developers to keep the services running with the low player base. Mojang also took the time to thank the players and the developers of the game, expressing their hesitance to remove access to the title.
