Star Trek Mobile Game is in the spotlight after new announcements

While Star Trek may be seemingly taking a break from the movies for the time being, it is fair to say that the much-loved science-fiction franchise is once again thriving on the small screen with their mobile game. The first season of Star Trek: Picard has just come to an emotional end, while fans are now also gearing up for a third run of Star Trek: Discovery.

Of course, another area where we have seen Trek do consistently well down the years has been in gaming, with fans jumping at the opportunity to embark on adventures with their favorite characters.

A long history

The huge popularity of Star Trek means it unsurprisingly has a long history in a range of different forms of gaming.

Remarkably, the first game based on it was released in the early 1970s and took the format of a text-based strategy title. In the years since then, the franchise has also gone down the PC simulation route with Star Trek Starfleet Academy, while it has even entered the casino world too. For example, a game based on Sir Patrick Stewart’s previous adventures as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation is among the free slots on SlotsCalendar.

Taking a look at how things stand in the present, it is hard to argue against the fact that Star Trek has truly blossomed on mobile. In fact, there have been some intriguing news related to two of the leading titles out there in recent weeks.

Fresh developments

First up, there was the news last month that Tilting Point has acquired Star Trek Timelines. Created by Disruptor Beam and originally launched in 2016, the strategy game revolves around the premise that a rift in time has allowed characters from each of the franchise’s different eras to come together in the same universe. Players can then handpick their favorite characters to form a crew and tackle missions.

According to TechCrunch, Tilting Point has not only taken on the game but also hired staff from Disruptor Beam to create a new studio. It is thought to be the first time that the company has chosen to acquire both a game and the team behind it. Tilting Point estimates that Timelines has been downloaded around eight million times, but reportedly believes there is still plenty of opportunity for future growth.

Another Star Trek mobile game back in the headlines has been Star Trek: Fleet Command, which is based on the version of the characters featured in the most recent movies. In the middle of March, it was revealed that its creators Scopely have raised $200 million in additional funding. It is now understood that the company has around $400 million at its disposal following recent funding efforts, with VentureBeat reporting that it looks set to use the capital to support its strategy to expand its portfolio of games.

A key part of pop culture

Star Trek has been a fundamental part of popular culture for more than half a century and it is still going strong in so many ways today.

The recent reports related to two of its best-known mobile games are fascinating and all eyes will be on how both Timelines and Fleet Command fare following these new developments.
