Valdus Esports is crowned as the PUBG Mobile World Invitational (PMWI) East 2021 champions

A great run for the Thai esports team!

The PUBG Mobile World Invitational (PMWI) East 2021, has just concluded with Valdus Esports from Thailand as the champions after a wonderful run over the course of the 4-day long tournament. With a huge prize pool of $3,000,000 albeit for charity and goodwill causes, this PUBG Mobile esports event is an amazing move by the organizers as it is promoting games for a good cause other than for entertainment purposes. The teams will be able to spend their prize money acquired in a charity foundation of their will.

PUBG Mobile World Invitational (PMWI) East 2021: As it happened

Though an invitational non-competitive event, the tournament featured the top global teams of the highest level, therefore not lacking in entertainment one bit. It featured some of the biggest teams such as Natus Vincere, Valdus Esports, Zeus Esports, and Bigetron Red Aliens popularly known as BTR. The competition threw light on the current conditions of the teams and where they stand now as compared to the last world event that was held.

Valdus Esports, who’ve been great domestically but underperforming at the global stage, started off the tournament with a bang. They got 5 consecutive top 3 spots in a single day and rocketed off to a 60 point lead within just 5 matches. Zeus Esports, regarded as the best team from South Asia had a rather shaky start.

But soon they caught up on the second day, but it was as if Valdus was unstoppable. Bigetron, who is well-reputed to be very slow at the start lagged and struggled to get top spots. This led to them dropping below the top 10 ranks in the leaderboard.

Natus Vincere, another rising giant in the esports scene showed us again why they are regarded as such. They got the most kills despite being behind the top spot by a considerable margin. Bigetron finally woke up on the last day grabbing 2 chicken dinners and doing a frog leap from the 11th spot to the 5th. In the end, they finished at the 5th spot just behind Zeus Esports.

PMWI East 2021 was full of surprises for esports fans

Besides the big teams, the most surprising run in the tournament was by D’Xavier from Vietnam. Originally not a contender to win or get a podium in any way, they surprised us with very consistent performance. And in the end, they got the 3rd spot over the likes of Zeus, Bigetron, Geek, and A1. A1 Esports, the surprise team of the PMGC, finished outside the top 10 after rather shoddy gameplay that lacked confidence.

Martin, the IGL of Valdus and one of its founding members, claimed the MVP title of the tournament. Tixzy from Natus Vincere aka NAVI finished second by a close margin. Martin with his outstanding performance and leadership across all the matches was more than worthy for the title as he led his team to the trophy.

Final Thoughts

Although it was not a competitive tournament, PMWI East 2021 gave us an idea of what to expect from the teams in the upcoming tournaments. Also, this was a chance for the teams to correct and come over their mistakes by evaluating their performance throughout the 4-day event. However, this tournament was not a qualifier in any way and will not count towards the qualification to the annual PMGC 2021. The slots for PMGC will be attainable only via domestic and regional tournaments such as the PMPL.
