Avatar Generations Beginners Guide and Tips

Start your journey and create the ultimate Team Avatar!

Avatar Generations is a new mobile tactical RPG, recently released for both Android and iOS. Players can build teams of classic characters from the Avatar universe to fight in strategic battles. The game boasts a dynamic storyline, featuring some memorable scenes from the official TV show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Like most RPG titles, Avatar Generations has a bunch of different elements which prompt some thinking. This includes strategic gameplay, the variety of heroes, and the different ways to upgrade them. For a new player, there’s quite a lot to take in. It’s worth knowing about each of these aspects to get the most out of the game’s core storyline. In this Avatar Generations beginners guide, we cover exactly that, as well as some tips and tricks to kickstart your game progression.

Gameplay Overview

Avatar Generations is built around the core storyline, which features moments and characters directly from the Avatar universe. The game’s main Adventure Mode is where players will find themselves for the most part. Here, there is a map of the Four Nations, with various nodes to navigate. The map is quite big but the game will set objectives specifying areas to cover to progress in the storyline.

When entering a new location, we must first set up a team of up to 4 Heroes to travel and battle. There isn’t a limitation to the number of teams either – players can build up to 3 teams using their Heroes. Why would you want to do this?

Well traveling around the different nodes takes a certain amount of time, depending on the distance to travel. To avoid waiting times, we can just build another team of heroes, covering more of the map at the same time.

To progress through the Adventure Mode, players must cover all the essential nodes in the map as prompted. Each node can have some dialogue scenes which contribute to the overall story, as well as a battle itself. The battles follow a turn-based format with some strategic elements. The team building from earlier makes a difference here, and there are a bunch of different skills unique to each hero as well as several other features. Don’t worry – we will explain all of these things later in our Avatar Generations beginners guide.

Over time, the game gets more challenging and so the Heroes improve as well. Players can train their Heroes in various ways to make them more effective in battle. There are also opportunities to obtain new Heroes through the gacha mechanics, or Summoners, as the game calls them.

Introducing the Basics of Avatar Generations

First and foremost, the gameplay in Avatar Generations may need a little bit of explanation. The tutorial introduces the player to the controls well, but the strategic element is a little difficult to grasp initially. At first, you may find yourself easing through battles. However, the battles may get challenging and that’s where the tactical aspect comes into play.

As said earlier, the gameplay follows a turn-based format where each team fight until only one is left standing. Each hero has unique skills and attributes to use when battling with the enemy. The idea is to try and combine attacks with other Heroes in the team, find weaknesses in the enemy team, and consequently, defeat each enemy team member.

Focus Meter

The focus meter/combo bar is displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen, and this red bar fills up after each attack. Once the bar fills up completely, the player can unleash a devastating special attack in which several Heroes combine to deal increased damage to the enemy team. There are a few points along the bar which are marked, and it’s possible to use a combo attack at these points, although this will not be as powerful as when the bar is full.

Turn Order

The turn order is just the order in which the heroes take their turn – there isn’t much else to it. Players can alter the turn order by dragging heroes along the queue in the bottom left of the screen. This is particularly useful as sometimes, it’s possible to deal additional damage by linking attacks from 2 specific heroes, one after the other.

That’s not the only way it changes though, some skills may impact the order by speeding or delaying moves. Additionally, heroes with slow attack speed attributes may not get as many opportunities to attack as heroes with fast attack speeds.

Using elemental combinations

Each hero is classed under one of the 5 elements, similar to the TV show: Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and the Non-Benders. Back-to-back attacks of the same element result in increased damage, so combining multiple heroes of the same element can be a good technique to help end off matches quickly. When doing this, make sure to tweak the turn order to ensure the heroes of the same element have their turns straight after each other.

Using Counters

Each character has a weakness, and correctly identifying and exploiting this can be key to winning battles. Before the battle, players can examine the enemy team, including each individual enemy’s profile which details their element, the type of character they are, their skills, etc. This is vital information and it is important to keep this in mind in-game.

Mastering the Heroes

A big part of Avatar Generations is its big roster of characters all from the official Avatar universe. Collecting them is an important part of the game’s progression, especially because the gameplay encourages active team-building to combine and counter. There are a number of things that make each hero unique, and there are several ways to improve them too.

Character classification

Each character is classed under one of the 5 elements which are Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and the Non-Benders. as described earlier. In addition to that, characters also have an additional type and this attribute type defines the character’s play style. The attribute types include Offense, Defense, Mind, Peace, and Chaos.

The screenshot below shows how the play styles relate to each other. For example, Offence is effective against the Mind but can be countered by Defence. Peace and Chaos are on their own outside the triangle, with little additional effect on the other 3, but both are counters to each other.

Undestanding these types are key to finding counters in Avatar Generations. Having a large collection of heroes ensure there is a counter to almost everything the enemy team could throw at you, and this is the best position to be in.

Character stats and attributes

Each character has a unique set of attributes which essentially just define how good they are in-game. Comparing attributes is the best way to compare heroes to see which is the better one.

  • HP: How much damage the hero can take in battle before dying
  • ATK: The base damage inflicted by the hero (this is rarely seen due to all the in-game buffs but it is a good indicator of a hero’s strength
  • DEF: The hero’s ability to mitigate incoming damage
  • SPD: The attack speed of the hero which is compared with other heroes on the team when determining the turn order
  • Crit rate: The probability of the hero inflicting a critical attack (increased damage)
  • Crit damage: The additional damage inflicted during a critical attack
  • Accuracy: The probability of inflicting buffs on the enemy
  • Resistance: The hero’s ability to withstand incoming buffs
  • Battle rating: An overall summary of the hero’s ability which takes into account pretty much all the factors listed above

Upgrading and Improving Heroes

To upgrade a hero, simply head to the heroes menu from the main menu, select the hero to upgrade, and begin spending resources on them. Leveling heroes will increase the hero’s HP, ATK, and DEF attributes, in exchange for Experience Scrolls, a currency obtained through various rewards in the game.

After 10 levels, the hero hits a maximum level, but it’s possible to raise this maximum through Ascension. This process requires special items and currency, but in return, the hero’s max level increases, allowing you to further improve their stats.

Through the equipment section on the hero’s page, it is possible to add additional passive buffs. Gear can be unlocked in various parts of the game and equipping heroes with gear is one of the ways to increase crit rate, crit damage, accuracy, and resistance.

Avatar Generations Beginners Guide: Tips and Tricks

1. Log in daily for free Rewards

There are several rewards available to players just for logging in each day. To get the most out of the game, it’s worth loading the game up for at least a minute or two every day, just to claim all the daily log-in rewards. There are useful items and currencies just sitting there for free, it would be silly to just miss out on them!

2. Complete your Daily missions on time

When claiming the daily log-in rewards, if you have a bit more time to spare, you could use this to work through the list of daily missions. They are all quite straightforward to do and the rewards will be very useful going forward in the game.

Working through the daily missions is one of the best ways to progress in Avatar Generations, as alongside completing the mission itself, the game will prompt progression in the storyline as well.

3. Get the right balance between Upgrading heroes and getting New ones

It’s important to manage resources carefully when it comes to upgrading heroes and getting new ones. New shiny toys to play with are always fun, but it’s also as important to work with what you already have and to improve their abilities as well.

Similarly, it’s not a good idea to spend all resources on upgrading just a couple of heroes to high levels. Having a diverse set of heroes of varying elements and playstyles allows for different possible counters in-game, so upgrading heroes and getting new ones are both equally as important. Therefore, it is important to get the right balance between the two.

4. Analyze the Enemy team before battle

If a battle ever feels difficult to beat, make sure to analyze the enemy team to see what you are actually up against. The information is there for free, and knowing what characters are on the other team can help identify possible counters and this is key to winning in Avatar Generations.

5. Distribute your Equipment effectively

Using equipment can be a very useful tool in Avatar Generations, as they provide an additional edge in battle. Giving a single hero the best equipment is not ideal, as it leaves the rest of the group lacking in that department. If that single hero gets caught out in battle, all that equipment suddenly has no use. Try to distribute the equipment to a group of heroes, ideally, a group with each individual representing one of the elements or one of the play styles.
