With the completion of gameweek 12, the Watchlist is back to identify players who have caught the eye, based on recent performances and upcoming fixtures. Liverpool and Spurs are enjoying their smooth fixture therefore we will keep special focus on them.

1. Virgil van Dijk (Defender) – 6.7 million

After destroying Arsenal with 4 goals and a clean sheet V. Van Dijk has made all 12 appearances for Liverpool till now. He is a defensive giant at the back with a superior aerial threat to score goals from corners. The Dutch International has provided one assist with a 0.01 (xA/90) expected assist figure and attempted 188 long passes with a 72.9% completion ratio and created one big chance. Despite not scoring a goal this season he has a non-penalty expected goal figure of 0.10 (xG/90) with a total of 14 shots.

Liverpool is already enjoying its favourable fixture and kept 3 clean sheets in their last six gameweeks in which Van Dijk has played an important role. The upcoming fixture of Liverpool is also luring for FPL managers to boost their ranks. In their next 14 gameweeks they will only face one team with a difficulty level of 5 and six teams with a difficulty level of just 2. So, it’s high time to include one Liverpool defender in the FPL squad.

2. Conor Gallagher (Midfielder) – 6.0 million

Patrick Vieira has completely transformed this Crystal Palace side. And at the heart of the Palace midfield is Gallagher. He boasts a non-penalty expected Goals + assists of 0.59 per 90 and gets 0.47 Big chances per 90 mins. Gallagher has two goals in his last three games for the Eagles with one of them against the mighty Man City defense. Boasting around 3.48 touches in the box per 90, he is someone to hold on to for the long term. It should also be noted that since Gallagher made his first appearance in gameweek 2 only Salah and Mane have produced more FPL points amongst midfielders.

Probably at this point, you already own the Englishman and if you do not, it’s high time you do. Both Maxwel Cornet and Conor Gallagher are the two best budget midfielders at the moment. He faces Aston Villa and Leeds next, both teams, struggling defensively at the moment. These are followed by a trip to Man United, then home ties with Everton and Southampton.

3. Bernardo Silva (Midfielder) – 7.2 million

Bernardo Silva rounded off a comfortable 3-0 win over Everton with his4th goal of the season. His total of 2 big chances in gameweek 12 was on par with Diogo Jota and Christian Pulisic. Only Raheem Sterling was afforded more with three and no teammate took as many as his 7 touches in the opposition penalty box. The Portuguese midfielder has started each of the last 11 gameweeks playing a direct hand in six goals.

Four of those involvements have come during the last five gameweeks where his 33 FPL points trail only Maxwel Cornet, Emile Smith Rowe, and Mohamed Salah amongst midfielders. Only Mo Salah has recorded a better expected goals figure from midfield than Bernardo in that time and he ranks amongst the top four midfielders for expected assists behind Salah, Conor Gallagher, and Nathan Redmond. Man City face Watford Leeds and Newcastle in the next six gameweeks.

4. Christian Benteke (Forward) – 6.4 million

Christian Benteke scored twice to continue his recent hot streak in a six-goals thriller at Turf Moor. Only Joshua King recorded as many as his 2 big chances amongst forwards in the gameweek 12 with Raheem Sterling the only player to better that across all positions with 3. No player fired more than Benteke’s 5 shots in the box. With 4 goals in the last five gameweeks, the Belgian has produced 29 FPL points again ranking second-best amongst forwards this time trailing Emmanuel Dennis with 30.

No player in his position has fired as many as his 18 shots and only Aubameyang has landed as many as his 8 efforts on targets. Mohamed Salah is the only player able to better those tallies across all positions. Crystal Palace have scored 10 goals in the last five gameweeks with only Man City, Chelsea, and Liverpool netting more. They rank amongst the top six teams for both big chances and expected goals.

5. Joshua King (Forward) – 5.6 million

King has been an interesting player, nailed for Watford in the central striker position. However, the goal-scoring does not seem to be his focus. King tends to drop deep during an attack and look for the final pass and assist a goal for his teammates. He possesses 0.54 expected goals per 90 figure with an 0.23 expected assists figure. Around this time with more and more players opting for a 5 at-the-back system with two-three premium defenders, budget forwards like King could be the way to go at the moment.

Watford does not have an easy fixture run in the short term. With Leicester, Chelsea, and Man City next, neither of their assets look to be the most desirable ones, but for 5.6 million budget-enabler, regular starter, and possibly for penalties King is definitely on the radar. After the City game, the Hornets face Brentford, Burnley, and Palace and with a 5.6 million cheap forward, if you want to restructure your midfield or defense then King should be your man.
