Genshin Impact Lyney Guide: Abilities, Playstyle, and more

Genshin Impact's new character Lyney and his abilities explained!

Genshin Impact Version 4.0 debuts “Spectacle of Phantasmagoria” Lyney (pyro/bow), the first event-exclusive 5* character from Fontaine. He is a pretty decent on-field DPS who shines in a limited number of teams. This guide will provide a detailed breakdown of how his abilities as Lyney work and how to play him in a team in Genshin Impact.

Genshin Impact Lyney Guide: Abilities description

Talent upgrade priority

Normal attack > Elemental skill = Elemental burst

The majority of his DMG comes from his charged shots which scale off Normal attacks. His burst and skill are equally important but prioritize Normal attack first.

Normal attack: Card Force Translocation

Normal Attack

Performs up to 4 consecutive shots with a bow.

Plunging Attack

Fires off a shower of arrows in mid-air before falling and striking the ground, dealing AoE DMG upon impact.

Charged Attack

Performs a more precise Aimed Shot with increased DMG.
While aiming, flames will run across the arrowhead before being fired. Different effects will occur based on the time spent charging.

  • Charge Level 1: Fires off a Pyro-infused arrow, dealing Pyro DMG.
  • Charge Level 2: Fires off a Prop Arrow that deals Pyro DMG, and upon hit, it will summon a Grin-Malkin Hat.

When firing the Prop Arrow, and when Lyney has more than 60% HP, he will consume a portion of his HP to obtain 1 Prop Surplus stack. Max 5 stacks. The effect will be removed after the character spends 30s out of combat.
The lowest Lyney can drop through this method is 60% of his Max HP.

Grin-Malkin Hat

  • Can taunt nearby opponents and attract their attacks. Each opponent can only be taunted by the Hat once every 5s.
  • The Hat will inherit a percentage of Lyney’s Max HP.
  • If destroyed, or if its duration expires, it will fire off a Pyrotechnic Strike at 1 nearby opponent, dealing Pyro DMG.

Only 1 Hat can exist at any given time.

Arkhe: Pneuma

At certain intervals, the Prop Arrow will cause a Spiritbreath Thorn to descend upon its hit location, dealing Pneuma-aligned Pyro DMG.

Elemental skill: Bewildering Lights

Lyney does a flourish with his hat, unleashing a firework surprise!
When used, he will clear all current Prop Surplus stacks and deal AoE Pyro DMG to opponents in front of him. DMG will be increased according to the stacks cleared, and this will also regenerate Lyney’s HP based on his Max HP.

When a Grin-Malkin Hat created by Lyney is on the field, the fireworks will cause it to explode, dealing AoE Pyro DMG equal to that of a Pyrotechnic Strike.
The DMG dealt through the Grin-Malkin Hat in this way is considered Charged Attack DMG.

Elemental burst: Wondrous Trick: Miracle Parade

Unleashing his magic, Lyney turns himself into a Grin-Malkin Cat that can move around quickly. (Not to be mistaken for the Grin-Malkin Hat. They’re two different props!)
When the Grin-Malkin Cat gets close to opponents, it will send flames falling down on them, dealing at most 1 instance of Pyro DMG to each opponent. When the duration ends, he will dismiss the Grin-Malkin Cat and ignite fireworks that deal with AoE Pyro DMG, summon 1 Grin-Malkin Hat, and grant himself 1 Prop Surplus stack.

Grin-Malkin Cat can be actively canceled.

Ascension 1 passive: Perilous Performance

If Lyney consumes HP when firing off a Prop Arrow, the Grin-Malkin hat summoned by the arrow will, upon hitting an opponent, restore 3 Energy to Lyney and increase DMG dealt by 80% of his ATK.

Ascension 4 passive: Conclusive Ovation

The DMG Lyney deals to opponents affected by Pyro will receive the following buffs:

  • Increases the DMG dealt by 60%.
  • Each Pyro party member other than Lyney will cause the DMG dealt to increase by an additional 20%.

Lyney can deal up to 100% increased DMG to opponents affected by Pyro in this way.

Utility passive: Trivial Observations

Displays the location of nearby resources unique to Fontaine on the mini-map.

Genshin Impact Lyney Guide: Abilities explained

In this guide in Genshin Impact, we will breakdown the abilities of Lyney in-game and how they will affect the gameplay.

Normal attack: Card Force Translocation

Lyney’s level 2 charged shot is the main focus of his kit. As long as his HP is above 60%, a level 2 charged shot will create a Prop stack (max 5) by consuming 20% of his max HP. Since the stacks are only created when his HP is above 60%, he will need to receive active healing on the spot to raise his HP above 60% and create more Prop stacks by consuming HP again. Thankfully these stacks do not disappear after switching and they stay for 30s.

This level 2 charged shot also creates a Grin-Malkin Hat. This hat is destroyed (dealing AOE Pyro DMG) when another level 2 charged shot is fired, or when its duration expires after 4s. Firing consecutive level 2 charged shots will continue to create, destroy and create Grin-Malkin Hats since only one of them can exist at a time. The hat also taunts enemies every 5s, which is not the most reliable taunt but it gets the job done.

As a Pneuma-aligned character, Lyney’s level 2 charged shots will also deal a small amount of Pneuma-aligned Pyro DMG which can help neutralize Ousia-aligned enemies.

Elemental skill: Bewildering Lights

Lyney’s skill is meant to be used at the end of a rotation. It consumes all Prop stacks and deals AOE Pyro DMG, this DMG is increased based on the number of stacks consumed. This skill also regenerates 20% HP per stack consumed.

Elemental burst: Wondrous Trick: Miracle Parade

Lyney transforms into a Grin-Malkin Cat and he can deal 1 instance of Pyro DMG to enemies that he hits. This state can be canceled early by pressing the elemental skill button. Ending this state will cause an AOE Pyro explosion, grant him 1 Prop stack and leave 1 Grin-Malkin Hat on the field.

Ascension 1 passive: Perilous Performance

Helps with energy generation just by using level 2 charged shots.

Ascension 4 passive: Conclusive Ovation

Increases DMG dealt against enemies affected by Pyro, as well as provides another DMG buff based on the number of Pyro teammates. This DMG buff caps at 2 Pyro teammates (3 total Pyro characters in the team including Lyney). Since he can gain up to 100% increased DMG, this passive heavily incentivizes a Mono Pyro team for Lyney.

Utility passive: Trivial Observations

Marks Fontiane’s regional specialty items on the map, making it easier to farm them.

Genshin Impact Lyney Guide: Playstyle

It is clear that Lyney’s best role is that of an on-field main DPS in a Mono Pyro team. He has multiple sources of Pyro application which makes it difficult to reliably Vaporize the application with the highest multiplier. The best way to play Lyney would be to include 2 Pyro teammates, and an Anemo unit or a shielder.

The goal with Lyney is to get as many Prop stacks as possible before using his skill to end the rotation. An ideal rotation would be:

  • Use all teammate’s abilities
  • Switch to Lyney and fire 3-4 level 2 charged shots
  • Use his burst if it is available
  • Cancel his burst early by using the skill button
  • Use his skill

Final Thoughts

Lyney is the first 5* character that specializes in a Mono Pyro team. Despite the abundance of Pyro characters, Lyney has a limited selection of teammates since most of them are designed to be on-field DPS just like him. With the right teammates, Lyney can dish out a lot of AOE Pyro DMG within a short burst of time.
