Neuvillette Story Quest ACT I: In-Depth Review and Discussion
Neuvillette’s Characterization and Personality
With Fontaine finally being released we have been quite accustomed to many of the new characters that were introduced in the Archon Quest story-line. One of the characters that stood out the most is the serious Monsieur Neuvillette, the Chief Justice of Fontaine. Neuvillette initially seemed to be a cold and apathetic character, who lacks emotions.
But of course, as secrets are revealed and we delve into his story, we can finally understand why he is characterized as such within the people of Fontaine and with us to an extent. Neuvillette has been revealed to be the reincarnated Hydro Sovereign. Essentially, it means that he is the Dragon of Hydro.
The Seven Sovereigns once ruled Teyvat many thousands of years ago, long before the Archons ascended to Godhood. They were the rulers of the Old World. Unfortunately, they were all killed and vanquished. The reborn Dragons were said to not have their full powers come back to them, and some may take the form of a human just like Neuvillette.
Neuvillette expresses how due to him being unhuman-like, he is still trying to adapt and be accustomed to human society. But he feels isolated and cannot seem to feel connected to them and hence in turn be in tune with human emotions, hence why he seems to be closed off and does not seem to hold any close companions to him, except the Melusines and Furina, the current Hydro Archon.
Despite the appearance of an adult man and the personality of a mature person, Neuvillette still feels like a fledgling out of water, having an existential crisis about his purpose of being reborn and existing. The story quests explore such issues Neuvillette has with himself and how he copes with his emotions.
Overall Story Plot
The story starts with us visiting Neuvillette unexpectedly. He expresses a clear distress within himself as he reveals the terrible situation. Apparently, a Melusine named Kiara has received a threatening letter. Neuvillette, who is greatly close and protective over the Melusines, wishes to investigate this case and find the perpetrator personally.
As a Chief Justice of Fontaine, it will be odd and out of the ordinary to see him investigate out in the open, but Neuvillette insists that he helps Kiara and finds the person responsible for this. We further witness Neuvillette as he shows care for Kiara, telling her to go back to the Palais Mermonia for protection.
Afterward, he appoints Clorinde to keep guard of Kiara while he investigates. He goes back to the Palais and stifles through the piles and piles of documents in his office in order to get any sort of information that can help with the case.
Neuvillette again displays his prowess in retaining memories and information in his mind where he can remember where the documents lie and what contents there are most of the time. We also see Neuvillette showcase his power when we go to the Fountain of Lucine as we accidentally go through his memories.
We find out that the Melusines were brought into human society by Neuvillette and were appointed as detectives due to their sight. Of course, we also see them face oppression and prejudiced comments initially. But the story shows how that is not the case anymore seeing as how Melusines are now regarded highly by the Fontaine people and are shown compassion.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the story felt very emotional and sad as we finally see Neuvillette’s perspective on his feelings regarding himself, how he feels currently as a reborn Hydro dragon acting as Chief Justice in Fontaine, his sense of Justice, etc.
