Why Mobile Games are Still So Popular?

Data from across the spectrum suggests that mobile gaming would be just over three times as popular as console gaming and just under three times as popular as PC gaming during 2020. This follows reports that indicate mobile gaming makes up more than half of all industry revenue and market share– beating all other forms combined. A recent report from market researcher Newzoo forecasted that the Mobile Games will generate a whopping $77.2 billion in 2020. That is a growth of 13.3% year-on-year. But why is it that mobile games are very popular?

Mobile Gaming is Simple

One of the main benefits of mobile gaming compared to other modes of gaming is the simplicity of it. Most people have a smartphone and games are therefore just an app download or a browser search away. Consoles require financial outlay, and PC gaming often includes software and hardware. But mobile gaming can be picked up easily.

This could explain why there has been an increase in casual gamers, as they are able to test the waters without much spending. Games like Candy Crush Saga, The Simpsons Tapped Out, and Kim Kardashian: Hollywood brought a new flavor to mobile gaming that allowed people with broader interests to test gaming out.

As we use our smartphones constantly, we are able to pick up casual games from Hole.io to Temple Run easily. Compare this to console gaming and desktop gaming, which are more ‘deliberate’ acts. Mobile gaming can be a response to having some free time or needing something to do during a commute. In our minds, console and PC gaming are more of a time commitment. You wouldn’t turn the PC on just to spend five minutes on a game.

Mobile Gaming Offers the Latest Tech

As most people do have smartphones, the technology for them is often far more advanced than consoles; which are typically slower to develop. The main smartphone manufacturers – Apple, Samsung, Huawei, and Google, for example, bring out a new model every year. The fierce competition between them helps mobile gamers by providing them with the very latest in technology.

This can be seen through the AR technology offered for Pokémon Go, and the other games that Niantic plans to develop further. Accessible AR tech was previously nonexistent. Now gamers can test out the exciting concept. Moreover, as the growth in live casino options show, those who play on the go are also able to experience the same live, realistic atmosphere for online casino games like poker, blackjack, and roulette as they would on the desktop. This innovation in streaming tech has furthered the industry with many people now ‘getting involved’ via watching other players.

Final thoughts

Mobile gaming will no doubt continue to soar in popularity, leaving other methods of gaming scrabbling behind it. The popularity of mobile gaming is a response to how people are wanting to engage with their games. And it is able to use a quick turnaround to keep people interested.
