Clash Royale is making some great changes, with updates coming live, new modes like CHAOS, and another update now called the Mid-March 2026 Update. The update focuses heavily on Heroes, giving you more control over unlocking them while also adjusting deck building and rewards.
Alongside the new Hero Unlock system, the update also introduces a deck slot rework, improved 5-Star Magic Lucky Chest rewards, and multiple quality-of-life improvements across the game. So here’s everything you need to know about the new update.
Clash Royale Mid-March 2026 Update: All you need to know
New Hero Unlock system
This update brings us the new Hero Unlock system, which gives us more control over which Hero we want to obtain. If you are Arena 5 or higher, you receive 200 Hero Coins for free when the update goes live. These coins can be used to unlock any Hero of your choice.
Hero Coins are the new name for what was previously called Hero Fragments. Previously, Heroes were unlocked randomly, but with this system, you can now select the exact Hero you want once you have 200 Hero Coins.
Hero Coins can also be earned through the Pass Royale free track, where you can collect up to 75 Hero Coins every season. You can find this option in the Magic Items tab under the Heroes section.
Inclusion to this now, instead of waiting for special events or random drops, new Heroes will be available to unlock immediately upon release. As long as you have 200 Hero Coins saved, you can unlock the new Hero as soon as it becomes available in the game.
Deck slot rework
As mentioned during the announcement of major gameplay updates last month, this update introduces the deck slot rework. With this, it is reducing the maximum number of special deck slots from four to three.
The new deck structure includes:
- 1 Evolution Slot: Only for Evolution cards
- 1 Hero Slot: For Heroes and Champions
- 1 Wild Slot: Can be used for Evolutions, Heroes, or Champions
For Trophy Road progression, these slots unlock as you climb arenas. The Evolution Slot unlocks at Arena 3, the Hero Slot at Arena 5, and the Wild Slot at Arena 10.
5-Star Magic Lucky Chest improvements
The 5-Star Magic Lucky Chest has also received a major reward overhaul in this update. These chests now provide significantly more Wild Cards, often enough for a full upgrade depending on your chest level. In some cases, the rewards can be up to three times higher than before.
For example, at Chest Level 16, the number of Common Wild Cards has increased from 2500 to 7500, while Legendary and Champion Wild Card rewards have also been boosted. To balance the larger rewards, drop rates have been adjusted, increasing the chance of receiving Common and Rare Wild Cards while slightly lowering the probability for some higher rarities.
Other updates and additions
As for the additional changes, the Social Tab now displays your Clan information when tapping the Clan icon, and friends are sorted based on Ranked activity and trophy count. Pass Royale has also received improvements, including clearer reward descriptions and warnings for players below Arena 5 when unlocking Heroes from the pass.
On the gameplay side, multiple bugs have been fixed. Issues with cards such as Hero Barbarian Barrel, Executioner, Musketeer Evolution, and X-Bow modifiers have been resolved. Improvements have also been made to the ongoing C.H.A.O.S Mode, Merge Tactics, and general gameplay stability, alongside several visual and audio updates.
