- Discord users are required to verify their age with a face scan or ID upload to view sensitive content with this experiment.
- It is currently tested in the UK and Australia to likely meet their child safety laws.
- Discord has confirmed that the data used for age verification is only for the one-time process and is not stored by them or their vendor.
Discord, one of the most popular social platforms, is now testing a new experimental feature to verify its users’ age by scanning their face or ID. This age verification process is currently available only in the United Kingdom and Australia to help users manage content filter settings and sensitive content visibility.
Discord is experimenting with an age verification feature in the UK and Australia
In a recent development, various Discord users are now being asked to verify their age by either scanning their face or uploading their ID to access sensitive content on the platform.

Discord’s support page states that it’s an experimental feature, currently tested in the UK and Australia, probably complying with their digital safety laws to protect young users.
These changes comply with regional laws like the UK’s Online Safety Act and Australia’s requirement to restrict access to users under 16. In a statement, a Discord spokesperson clarified, “We’re currently running tests in select regions to age-gate access to certain spaces or user settings.”
How Discord’s age verification is triggered and how it works
Coming to the process, it is a one-time thing triggered when you first adjust sensitive content settings, or come across flagged media such as nudity or explicit content. Regardless of the situation, the process is the same, and you can re-verify if you want.

You should also note that this requirement only affects users who haven’t verified their age or are included in this experiment. When prompted, an age verification window will pop up, allowing you to either scan your face using a webcam or upload your ID via your mobile device.
As everyone is concerned about privacy, including me, the Discord team assures that the data is not stored by them or their vendor. They have clarified, “there is no collection of any biometric information when you scan your face,” and “the scan of your ID is deleted upon verification.“
