DONUTS GAMES has announced their latest title, Girls Band Cry: First Riff, now in development for Android and iOS. Developed in co-operation with Toei Animation, it is based on the popular anime series, Girls Band Cry, with the title’s genre yet to be revealed.
Prepare for a fun ride as the anime expands with games and films
Girls Band Cry: First Riff is based on the music drama anime, which aired in Japan from April to June 2024 with 13 episodes. If you don’t have any idea about the show, it follows Nina Iseri, a high school dropout, who meets Momoka, and their bond over music leads to forming a band with other girls.
Now, I’ll admit I was not the biggest fan of the anime, but this announcement has my attention. The genre is still under wraps, but I expect a rhythm-like game with RPG elements, since music is at the core of the anime. The trailer already gives us a glimpse of the band performing and Nina posting show flyers across the streets.
Players attending TGS 2025 will get an exclusive sneak peek
Alongside the game, Toei Animation also revealed an original film, adding to the two-part compilation films that are already in production. For me, this shows how much Toei is investing in making the series into a long-lasting franchise, which might even turn me into a fan.
Additionally, Girls Band Cry: First Riff will also make an appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2025 with its teaser trailer, a playable demo of the PC game, and exclusive promotional items. Girls Band Cry: First Riff is currently in active development for both Android and iOS. That said, the game’s launch date is yet to be announced. Stay tuned for more updates!
