Heartopia sparking controversy following racism accusations

The game is out for just two months globally.

Story Highlights
  • XD Entertainment's Heartopia faces a fresh wave of controversy over racism content on a quest.
  • The community has criticized the developers' official apology and the way handling of the situation.

When gamers hear of cozy life-simulation games, they usually think of relaxation, creativity, and a welcoming community. Players expect to build homes, enjoy hobbies, make friends, and escape real-world stress. However, the recently released life-sim Heartopia has become the center of an uncomfortable conversation within the gaming community, which is racism.

Instead of cozy vibes and wholesome adventures, the game has recently sparked controversy over accusations of racist content and concerns about how the developers handle criticism. So what actually happened? And why are players still talking about it? Well, stick with us as we break down the controversy and why players reacted strongly.

A cozy game that has been everything but cozy lately

First, let’s understand the game itself. Heartopia is a multiplayer life simulation game where players explore colorful environments, build homes, collect pets, and socialize with others in a shared world. In many ways, it resembles other cozy simulation games inspired by titles like Animal Crossing. You can read our complete Heartopia review to know more.

However, shortly after its release, Heartopia became embroiled in multiple controversies, ranging from AI-generated content debates to community moderation issues. Then a new update introduced something far more serious. Racism in Heartopia.

The quest that sparked the racism controversy

The most widely discussed incident involved a questline featuring an NPC named Kapil. In the event, players gave a mushroom to the character. After eating it, the character began jumping around while making sounds that many players interpreted as “monkey noises.” And to make the situation even more controversial, the character was one of the few people-of-color NPCs in the game.

Because racist stereotypes have historically compared Black people and other groups to monkeys, many players immediately saw the scene as offensive. And once the footage spread online, criticism escalated rapidly. Players on social media described the scene as “blatant racism” and demanded that the developers explain how it made it into the game.

The Developers’ response is a masterclass on what not to do when facing a controversy

To their credit, the developers acted quickly. Within about 24 hours of the backlash, the developers removed the quest and the NPC entirely. They also issued what players consider a half-hearted apology on the game’s Discord server, explaining that the animation was meant to show dizziness and loss of bodily control after eating a poisonous mushroom.

However, while some players appreciated the quick removal, others felt the apology was vague or incomplete. And it can be argued that the response failed to directly acknowledge why the scene was offensive in the first place. As a result, the controversy didn’t disappear when the quest was removed. Instead, it triggered a wider discussion about representation and moderation in the game’s community.

As expected, Heartopia has once again sparked community reactions and player complaints

Across Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), many players shared their frustrations with how the situation was handled. Some players claimed their posts discussing racism or criticism were removed or muted in official community spaces. Users claim messages discussing the issue were deleted quickly, and some players were temporarily muted after raising concerns.

And across X (Formerly Twitter), Players have expressed their outrage over the issue, and we have seen comments even claiming to uninstall the game entirely.

To make matters worse, this isn’t Heartopia’s first scandal

Earlier in 2026, players discovered that the game used AI-generated images in some puzzles and translation systems. The developers later confirmed this and promised to be more transparent about AI usage in the future.

Although the AI tools were not used in paid content, the initial lack of disclosure upset some players. And because trust had already been shaken, the racism controversy intensified existing frustrations.

Final Thoughts

At its heart, Heartopia was designed to be a cozy escape, a place where players could relax, create, and socialize. But recent events remind us that even peaceful games can become part of serious discussions. And the racism controversy surrounding Heartopia shows how quickly gaming communities respond when representation issues appear.

It also highlights the importance of listening to players and taking responsibility when mistakes happen. Ultimately, games are more than entertainment. They are shared worlds where millions of people interact. And when those worlds truly welcome everyone, they become much more powerful. A lesson Heartopia is yet to fully learn.
