- HoYoverse’s voice studio issues a statement against AI voice misuse.
- Written consent from both company and voice actors is mandatory.
- Even non-commercial or fan-made usage can violate voice acting rights.
It isn’t a surprise when we say AI has taken over almost every human activity you could do on an electrical system, and this includes the gaming space as well. While the benefits are easy to see, there’s also a line that needs to be drawn when it comes to how AI is used, and that shouldn’t fall under the category of “misuse”, which was something HoYoverse, one of the biggest developers now, has clearly addressed.
HoYoverse confirms unauthorized AI use of voices is treated as a serious legal infringement
The company’s voice acting studio recently issued a statement taking a firm stance against the unauthorized use of AI-generated voices, something that has been steadily growing across the gaming industry.
They’ve made it clear that no one can use these voices without written authorization from both the company and the artist. That “and” is the most important part of the whole announcement, which is protecting the voice actor and their works with it, too.
Any use of an artist’s voice through AI, whether it’s for generating content or even non-commercial usage, is considered a serious infringement if done without proper permission. It highlights something important: it matters who owns the voice and who gets to decide how it’s used.
If both sides agree and there’s proper authorization, that’s a different situation. But without that, HoYoverse is treating it as a direct violation of the artist’s rights. China, the country where HoYoverse originates from, has already AI voice-related infringement laws in its civil codes.
The studio also pointed out that cases involving AI misuse are increasing rapidly, and it’s already starting to affect how voice actors. Voice acting is a profession for many, and AI replicating it, not just stealing, is a very disappointing act, removing the authenticity that the actors bring. Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, and Zenless Zone Zero, all of HoYoverse’s titles, make use of authentic voice acting.

HoYoverse has made it clear that if violations are identified and verified, the company and its artists are prepared to take legal action to protect their rights. They’ve also encouraged fans and the community to report such cases if found.
There’s no denying AI is becoming a powerful tool, and in many instances, the use cases have been hard to ignore, but cases like this remind you that human talent is still at the centre of it all.
