Love and Deepspace announces ‘face verification’ feature for China server

Anti-minor laws are implemented in the CN version of the game

Story Highlights
  • Love and Deepspace being a Chinese game has strict Chinese regulations and laws to follow
  • Anti-minor laws are now rampant in the country and as such Infold Games are also taking precautions
  • The face verification feature is only available in the CN version of the game

Infold Games, the team behind the hugely popular Nikki and Mr. Love series, has been in the talks to implement some authentication features for its popular ultra-realistic free-to-play otome game Love and Deepspace. The Chinese gaming industry is no stranger to strict regulations, and the latest move by the developers Infold Games proves that the government is doubling down on its efforts to control underage gaming by introducing face verification.

Love and Deepspace: CN Server adds Face Verification to prevent minors from playing the game

Starting in April 2025, Love and Deepspace will introduce a ‘face verification’ feature as an additional layer of security on top of the existing e-mail and password identification process.

A user on the Love and Deepspace subreddit has recently posted a rough translation from China News on what is happening in the CN version of the game.

As someone who monitors gaming regulations, I find this development both intriguing and concerning. On the one hand, it makes sense. LaDS is an 18+ game, and yet, time and time again, minors have slipped through the cracks, and this face verification system is perfect for stopping this.

If a player is flagged for further verification, they’ll need to pass a facial recognition check. If they fail five times, their login attempt will be terminated. In theory, this should ensure that only verified adults access the game. Minors under 18 will be outright blocked from entering.

This decision aligns with China’s broader crackdown on gaming addiction among minors. For years, the country has imposed strict anti-addiction measures, such as limiting minors to just 90 minutes of gaming on weekdays and three hours on weekends and holidays.

Additionally, in-game reminders and regulatory assessments are required to ensure compliance. Love and Deepspace is already an 18+ game in China, so this move isn’t about restricting playtime, it’s about stopping underage players from getting in at all.

From an ethical standpoint, I understand why some people think this is a good move. Love and Deepspace isn’t exactly the most kid-friendly game out there, so ensuring that only adults play makes sense.

But, from a technical perspective, I have my reservations. Facial recognition technology is far from perfect. One wrong move, poor lighting, or an awkward angle could lock out legitimate players. And let’s not even get into the data privacy concerns. There is no news of such facial recognition hitting the global version of the game yet as the game still has a +12 rating on the app stores.
