Mobile Games market revenue expected to decline by 4.3% in 2022

A slight dip in the curve!

According to market research conducted by Newzoo, the Mobile Gaming industry’s revenue is expected to decline by 4.3% in 2022. The gaming industry is bound to generate a sum of $184.4 billion in 2022, down by -4.3% on a YOY basis.

The decline however is a result of two exceptional years of unprecedented growth in the Industry in the years 2020 and 2021. The growth in these years was exceptional as it was fueled by the lockdown, where people found gaming as a great way to kill some time because of which revenues in 2020 and 2021 were much higher than we anticipated back then.

Mobile and Console gaming industry to decline while the PC gaming industry is expected to stay on a rise

PC gaming however is expected to increase by 0.5% not a big improvement but definitely better than that of Console and Mobile. PC games have an increase of 0.5 because of the fact that top-grossing games typically have been around for multiple years. For instance, Skyrim was released in 2011, but to this date has a very active community, to add this up it also has arguably the biggest modding community in the PC gaming industry.

On the other hand, the Mobile gaming industry in 2022 is facing a massive decline in revenue of -6.4% on a YOY basis. Mobile gaming was booming with the lockdown in effect. But since then, it has been a low ride. Mobile gaming has a low barrier to entry, which means it’s easier for new developers to roll out their products in the markets, but they also can exit the markets as well as there is a low barrier to exit as well.

Console markets are expected to see a decline in their markets too with a decline of -4.2% on a YOY basis. The reason is the lack of good games being released in recent months, with just a couple of good games being released recently, this trend is set to continue.

There are Bright days for the Gaming industry ahead

In spite of these downing numbers, the future of gaming remains bright. The decline in the numbers of 2022 was nothing but a corrective measure for already inflated gaming numbers of 2020 and 2021. PC gaming in particular did well by surviving this corrective trend and managing to grow by 0.5% this growth however is expected to increase in numbers because Newzoo expects the Industry as a whole to grow from $179.1 billion in 2020 to $211.2 billion by 2025, growing at a +3.4% CAGR.

Console gaming is driven by heavyweight titles, in the future some amazing titles are expected to launch which would surely give a deserving lift to the current numbers of console gaming. Gaming is not a time-killing exercise but rather a sport driven by passion and commitment hence irrespective of how times change, the passion and demand for gaming are going to stay the same.
