Supercell to open new gaming studio in North America to develop cross-platform games

Aim to develop more cross platform games!

Finnish game developer Supercell is expanding its operation by opening a new gaming studio based in North America. The announcement was made on Twitter. The project will be helmed by industry veteran Ryan Wener, who will be the general manager of the new facility. In this article, we will talk about the impactful plans which Supercell has, up to its sleeve, for the NA facility.

The development studio will be an addition to 4 offices in Helsinki, Seoul, Shanghai, and San Francisco. The focus will be on building games that people don’t expect from Supercell. Reportedly, it will branch out from mobile-only games to other platforms. Supercell’s ambitious project is to combine great development talent from North America which is globally recognized for creating polished gameplay experiences for PC and consoles with the experience and flexible culture of Supercell.

Supercell New gaming studio: Flexible working of a core team

The company is searching for a core team of founders for its new studio, as they want a core team rather than an individual to be the kernel of the studio. The founders will be responsible for forming the team and the team will have complete freedom to create games. Supercell encourages a culture of independent teams, therefore, they will have the option to build on existing Supercell IPs or build one from scratch.

Developers at other companies might be accustomed to control mechanisms, greenlight processes, and executive oversight. We believe that mechanisms like these take ownership away from development teams, slow them down, and get in the way of creativity, resulting in worse games. So we just don’t work that way.

Starting from day one, the working conditions will be flexible and Supercell is open to remote, as well as hybrid working configurations. Employees will have the opportunity to work anywhere in North America. If they wish, they can also co-locate in the studio’s San Francisco HQ.

According to the general manager of the new wing, the team joining will be considered a startup within Supercell. It will benefit from Supercell’s massive, global reach. This comes along with support & insights from the best mobile game creators at Supercell.

Final Thoughts

Over ten years, Supercell has created smash hit titles like Clash of Clans, Clash Royale and Brawl Stars. They have published five titles. All of them have achieved the milestone of crossing $1 Billion in lifetime revenue with Clash Royale and Clash of Clans combined lifetime revenue being over a whopping $10 Billion

Supercell sets a high bar for its titles and is known for killing games in beta if they don’t meet their expectations. A recent example of this is the 2020-released Hay Day Pop. The company prides itself in making video games that are played for years. Not many people would know it, but Supercell started its journey by creating a browser-based non-mobile title, known as Gunshine. The MMORPG during its peak time reached half a million monthly players. But, it did not resonate with Supercell’s philosophy and was killed later.

The future looks promising for Supercell Games, as it has received further backing from Chinese gaming giant, Tencent, which has decided to raise stakes in Supercell. Additionally, Supercell has worked closely with Space Ape Games to create two new games, in name of Beatstar and Boom Beach Frontlines.

What are your thoughts on the new gaming studio made by Supercell in its North America office?
