Onmyoji, the popular mobile game based on the Japanese folklore is getting its Anime on Netflix

Enjy Onmyoji on Netflix soon!

Netflix is set to get an anime adaptation of the popular Onmyoji novel series and games, among which is the turn-based fantasy strategy game Onmyoji Arena from NetEase Games. As confirmed by Netflix Japan, Baku Yumemakura’s popular novel has been made into an anime, with distribution and streaming set to happen this 2023.

The anime will feature characters inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology

Baku Yumemakura’s Onmyoji is a collection of historical fantasy short stories and novels. It tells the story of a fictionalized Heian period Abe no Seimei, a master of a traditional Japanese form of cosmology named Onmydo. Abe no Seimei meets and befriends the hapless noble Minamoto no Hiromasa who work together to protect Heian-capital kyou’s from a clashing onmyoji, Douson, who is covertly plotting the emperor’s demise.

The series included novels and picture books in addition to short stories before games on its names were added. Two Onmoji games were released by NetEase which got inspired by the novels. Onmyoji was a turn-based RPG that was released first, which was followed by Onmyoji Arena, a strategy MOBA, which was more popular than its predecessor.

At the Netflix TUDUM event held on September 2022, it was first announced that Onmyoji would receive its first anime adaptation, which would be exclusive to Netflix. Later, the confirmation has been guaranteed and looks like it will be arriving any time soon.
