The notion that games on small screens don’t have to be little is something we’ve all become accustomed to. Grimguard Tactics, for instance, is a sprawling fantasy RPG, with action that spans a world of five continents and hundreds of years. The game would perfectly fit on a PC in terms of its scope and ambition, but it is also ideal for mobile.
Before we get around to explaining why, here’s everything you need to know about the game. Developed by Outerdawn, Grimguard Tactics is a fantasy epic set in the fictional world of Tereno, a century after a cataclysmic event brought humanity to its knees and plunged the land into figurative darkness.

Summon your army of heroes to free the world of Terenos
While the citizens of Terenos don’t remember the apocalypse, its legacy is all around in the form of hellish creatures and corrupting whispers of betrayal and danger that sow suspicion, doubt, and greed. Humanity is on its last legs, holed up in the dilapidated Holdfast. Naturally, it’s your job to turn the tide, take down the beasts, and deliver humankind from its immemorial nightmare.

Tereno is made up of five continents, all vaguely resembling regions of our world to some extent. Cartha, with its deserts and jungles, is a fictional, magic-infused version of Africa, while the proud, frostbitten realm of Urklund is a little bit Scotland, a little bit Russia.
While Siborni is the swashbuckling, scientifically sophisticated equivalent of Italy, and Vordlands is the fantasy twin of Central Europe, with its moderate climate and durable inhabitants, Hanchura is a huge country that resembles Southeast Asia, and China in particular. If that sounds like a lot of world-building for a mobile game, you should see how much effort has gone into creating the characters.

Players can select a variety of Heroes thanks to the more than 20 distinct RPG classes, each with its lore and duty. These Heroes can be further customized through three distinct subclasses, with ultra-rare and powerful factions like the Dawnseekers possible to unlock. Every single one of them has a very detailed narrative that explains their identity, origins, and goals.
We can’t possibly describe them all, so here’s a quick overview of one of our favorites. Shalziy is a Woodfae from Urklund, and a Blademaster. Shrewd and suspicious after years of persecution, she trains hard and fights harder as a mercenary warrior, coldly killing anybody who gets in her way. See? Badass.
Assemble your team and fight in epic battles against the Primorva
So what makes Grimguard Tactics such a perfect fit on mobile? Quite simply, it’s the ingenious way in which Outerdawn has translated the epic scale of its lore into highly contained, tactically rich turn-based combat.

Success in battle depends on keeping your Heroes as leveled up and Ascended as possible, combining alignments to unlock hidden bonuses, and fielding the right mix of types: Assault, Tank, Support, and Melee. Every combat takes place on an aesthetically pleasing grid-based battlefield, each with its distinct obstacles and layout.
Everything you need to plan multiple moves and deploy your units based on their strengths and skills is provided by this structure. Grimguard Tactics has plenty of tactical depth, but it’s also highly accessible and manageable on the small screen. Additionally, like any self-respecting mobile RPG, it lets you make progress AFK and complete battles automatically when you’re not in a position to roll up your sleeves and go to war properly.
Alternatively, you can settle in and spend a lot of time defeating bosses, reading dungeons, fighting other players in PvP, gathering resources, slaying creatures, and rescuing the planet. Grimguard Tactics: Fantasy RPG is available for free to download and play and you can try it right now on your respective App Store or Google Play.
