Riot to revert matchmaking changes in Wild Rift with an upcoming hotfix

Changes laid out in the Patch 2.5 Preview will be reverted back!

The Wild Rift developers gathered all of the community’s feedback and decided to take back their recent Patch 2.5 Preview changes made to the Ranked mode, reverting the matchmaking system. The changes were initially implemented to shorten the queue times for both high and low-rank players. Also, at the same time, it was meant to keep the match quality up. Although, the matchmaking changes are getting reworked, and here is how and why.

Wild Rift Patch 2.5 Preview: Matchmaking changes

The Wild Rift system is used to put out teams by combining each player’s rank and their hidden MMR (Matchmaking Rating). After the 2.5 patch update, the devs switched it up, by only taking the players MMR into account. Their reasoning behind the change was them using the MMR as a way to predetermine how the players will perform. This is since it is based on wins and losses. On the opposite side, a player’s Rank is only an indication of how he actually performed in the match. From the devs perspective, these systems do not scale directly with each other. Since a player with a lot of matches but average-skill can have the same rank as a new player with high skills. Although, their MMR would be completely different.

The Consequences

Overall, the changes were successful in giving more players across the ranks lower queue times, while not changing the fairness aspect of said matches. But, the success also came with one negative point.

Many players noticed some big visual gaps in rank, both in their team and the opposite team. This led to many players getting distressed, as to why this is happening to them. Since the changes have lowered the player’s confidence in the matchmaking system by getting fair teams and opponents, the devs have decided to revert most of the matchmaking changes in an upcoming hotfix. While they saw a positive change in low-rank games and queue times, the Wild Rift devs will still go through to revert the changes made. This will be to ensure an overall balancing through all ranks.

Upcoming Hotfix

  • Restrictions on the overall rank gaps to ensure games between same rank players.
  • New rank players will still have matchmaking based on their MMR to ensure low queue times.
  • Rank players of Master and above will get the reverted changes but will see an increase to queue times.

That’s all about the League of Legends: Wild Rift reverting the matchmaking changes laid out in the Patch 2.5 Preview! Best of luck with your games, and have fun!
