World Cricket Championship 4 announces its arrival with a teaser, but its purpose depends on what you expect

Cricket experience, even better?

Story Highlights
  • WCC4's teaser drop is exciting, but questions arise if a sequel is necessary.
  • Banking on a blockbuster franchise, WCC3 already had set benchmarks for a top cricket experience.
  • Visuals look similar to WCC3, with player models showing almost no noticeable evolution.

World Cricket Championship 4 finally has a teaser out, even though the glimpse is a short video with almost nothing new. Still, as a big-time fan of one of the best cricket franchises on mobile, I don’t understand if there’s a need for WCC4, and I have my points to share for the very same take.

Better physics, pitch-based gameplay, and realism are expected in World Cricket Championship 4

Starting things off, I see the teaser making use of AI to have a convo between two people on a flight to kind of boost their tagline, “sometimes the best can get even better”. Then what I saw was a glimpse of a good-looking stadium, but with graphics looking similar to what we have currently.

There’s no denying, I absolutely adore WCC3. I have played career mode twice, and I can easily say the mobile experience with this game is immense. But I don’t really get how things will go with this. WCC3 already nailed animations and cutscenes, yet it had a long list of areas that desperately needed improvement.

Where shall I start: improved ball physics, pitch-dependent gameplay, technical things like 120 fps support, and a little pinch of realism. For more extras, I do want to try women’s cricket modes, an area for community creation tools (maybe?), stable online matches, and the career mode made a tad bit interesting.

Now, when I look at this teaser, I wasn’t very involved because my biggest issue with WCC3 was how similar all the player models look, and it was the same in the video. It is difficult to have different builds for sure, but they looked a little skinny to my liking, and it seems like WCC4 doesn’t twist anything special to make it look different.

The timing also makes things interesting. With other cricket games levelling up, say Real Cricket, now backed by KRAFTON India, WCC4 is entering a far more competitive space than before. It can’t afford to just polish WCC3 and push it out as a sequel.

Still, this is just a teaser, and I expect the game to be built better. But the facts are that it needs a clear jump in quality, especially in gameplay depth and visual identity, if it wants to stand out like the earlier WCC titles once did. But can it? Only time will tell.
