April Fools Day 2026: How the gaming industry managed to fool its players

Which prank for the best?

April Fools’ Day for 2026 might be over, and chances are your friends or family pulled a prank or two on you. But while those jokes come and go, the gaming industry takes things to a whole different level during this time.

Every year, developers and publishers come up with creative, confusing, and sometimes unbelievably realistic pranks and announcements that leave players wondering what’s real and what’s not. These moments often catch the community off guard. You see something, pause for a second, and think: “Wait, is this actually real?”

This year was no different, with several games and studios joining in on the fun, delivering some truly memorable surprises. So, here’s a look at some of the best April Fools’ Day pranks from across the gaming world, and how developers managed to fool players once again.

Compilation of April Fools’ Day from the gaming industry

Clash of Clans delivered one of the funniest “maintenance” updates, packed with absurd changes that instantly raised eyebrows. Features like 0-Stars if you do a 99% 1-Star, rotating bases mid-attack, and Electro Dragon having its housing space down to 5 were clearly over-the-top stuff that we players were quick to understand as a prank.

I personally loved Honkai: Star Rail‘s attempt here. Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley is something most of us link to when pranking someone with a URL, but they instead made a full-fledged video about it! Best way to get rickrolled!

Heartopia teased a brand-new romance adventure titled “Love in Heartopia” with full-on details, which honestly felt like a genuine game reveal at first glance. But yes, releasing on February 29, 2027. Oh, wait, 2027 isn’t a leap year.

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE surprised players with a dramatic “NIKKE2” announcement that looked serious because they started this the day before, with all the cinematic posters. April 1 arrived, and they did come with a grand visual trailer, only to tell us that it opens pre-registration in 2036.

This didn’t stop here, Anchor Panic teased a Persona 5 collab, Delta Force pranked us with a new mode, SEGA announced that it made its logo 3% more blue (pretty noticeable by the way), and a few more fans were joining the party that might have even fooled the developers.

In the end, April Fools’ Day continues to be one of those days where the gaming industry just lets loose and has fun with its community. While jokes are there, some of these pranks look authentic and even amazing as an idea, where we even wish those jokes were actually real features.
