In an unprecedented move, players of the popular game Genshin Impact have taken their complaints against HoYoverse to the skies with an airship as a form of protest above Genshin Impact’s Teyvat Tower in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Teyvat Tower is well-known for its Genshin Impact cafe.
Dissatisfied with Hoyoverse’s silence, Koreans raise an airship for the first time
The leader of the Genshin Impact protest coalition explained on December 21, 2023, that the airship demonstration was planned to draw attention. The leader stated, “We conducted truck protests for five days recently for similar reasons but didn’t get much notice. It seems that the truck protests initially gained attention during the Pego Incident, and subsequent Uma Musume Carriage Protest, but plain truck protests are no longer capturing interest.”
The leader of the airship protest stated that over 2,000 users raised 16 million won (~ $12.2k) to organize the protest. The protest, which is scheduled to last four days, is being actively participated in by about ten users.
During preparations, the protest leader discovered that, in contrast to police records, airships had never been used for protest purposes. According to the leader, Even police officials confirmed there were no such cases. Even though similar incidents have occurred elsewhere, the leader stated, “Given the attention from many media outlets, it seems we’ve achieved our goal of drawing attention.”
The primary goal of the airship protest is to draw attention to HoYoverse’s lack of communication. HoYoverse’s current actions appear distant from communication, consistently responding to everything with silence. The leader emphasized, “We want HoYoverse to put forth at least minimal effort.”
In response to players’ dissatisfaction and the airship protest, a HoYoverse Korea representative stated, “We have temporarily closed the real-time chat to direct your focus more on the version broadcasts themselves.” We sincerely regret any inconvenience this has caused.” The representative went on to say, “We plan to reopen the real-time chat as usual afterward, and if, due to special reasons, it needs to be closed again, we will provide advance notice through announcements.”
Amid soaring airships above Teyvat Tower, Genshin Impact players send a clear message to HoYoverse: communication is essential. Players hope for a response as the airship protest unfolds, urging HoYoverse to bridge the gap and address the concerns that prompted this unique form of expression.
