The update added a new story chapter that continues the journey of the Traveler and their companions in Fontaine, the Hydro nation. One of the new additions in Version 4.2 of the game is the All-Devouring Narwhal, a weekly boss that can be found in a special Trounce Domain in Fontaine. It is a gigantic whale-like creature that can manipulate water and create devastating attacks. How to unlock the All-Devouring Narwhal Boss in Genshin Impact
To unlock the All-Devouring Narwhal boss, players need to complete the Archon Quest Chapter IV: Act 5 – Masquerade of the Guilty. This quest will take players to the underwater city of Fontaine, where players will encounter the mysterious Narwhal and its dark shadow.
The domain of the All-Devouring Narwhal can be found in the Salacia Plains, the underwater section right in front of the Court of Fontaine. It’s very close to the Pale Forgotten Glory Domain. One can challenge the All-Devouring Narwhal as many times as they want, but they can only claim rewards once per week by using 60 Original Resin (or 30 for the first 3 Weekly Boss claims of the week) to open the Ley Line Blossom.

The All-Devouring Narwhal boss fight has two phases namely, the first phase is on the surface, where one has to deal damage to the Narwhal and its Eye of Maelstrom. The second phase is inside the Narwhal’s belly, where one has to defeat the dark shadow.
Attacks and Abilities
Phase 1
The Narwhal has a variety of water attacks that can deal massive damage to your party. Here are some of its attack patterns and abilities:
- Leap: Leaps out of the ground, slamming towards the player, dealing 100% ATK as AoE Hydro DMG.
- Cracks form on the ground, transforming into a splash after a delay, dealing damage to opponents.
- May continue to swim forward, then dive back into the ground, dealing 100% ATK as AoE Hydro DMG with another wave of cracks.
- Penetrate:
- Cracks form on the ground below the player.
- The Narwhal penetrates through the ground, dealing 100% ATK as AoE Hydro DMG.
- Several splashes then occur around the impacted area, each dealing 50% ATK as AoE Hydro DMG.
- Dive:
- Dives down from above, dealing 100% ATK as AoE Hydro DMG.
- Several splashes then occur around the impacted area, causing minor damage.
- Crystal Shower: Crystal Rain summons crystals to rain down from the sky across the arena which causes effective major damage.
- Astral Downpour:
- Summons beams of light to shoot down across the arena, each repeatedly dealing 12.477% ATK as Hydro DMG.
- Devour:
- Accumulates Fury, devouring the player after reaching 120 points.
- Defeating the shadow inside reduces the Narwhal’s HP by 20% and paralyzes it.
- All party members gain maximum Energy.
- Eye of Maelstrom
- Summons an Eye of Maelstrom at the center of the arena.
- Charges and slowly pulls nearby players in, eventually exploding, dealing 50% ATK as AoE Hydro DMG.
To beat the Narwhal in this phase, you need to pay attention to its movements and dodge its attacks. You can also use the following tips to make the fight easier:
- Hydro Resistance: Equip characters with artifacts that boost Hydro resistance to mitigate the impact of Narwhal’s Hydro attacks.
- Freeze Tactics: Leverage Cryo characters or weapons to freeze the Narwhal’s Hydro shields, rendering it vulnerable to increased damage.
- Dodge and Maneuver: Prioritize characters with high mobility to evade the Narwhal’s water attacks effectively.
- Elemental Damage Boost: Enhance your team’s elemental damage by incorporating characters like Mona, Lisa, Fischl, or the Mappa Mare weapon.
One can also use Pneuma or Ousia attacks to quickly destroy the Eye of Maelstrom, which will draw the Narwhal’s hostility and make it devour one, triggering the second phase of the fight.
Phase 2: Belly
The second phase of the fight takes place inside the Narwhal’s belly, where you have to face the dark shadow. Some of the shadows’ abilities are thunder strike, horizontal sweep, downward cleave, spinning attack, and charging summon.
Once players defeat the shadow, one will deal 20% damage to the Narwhal and return to the surface, where the Narwhal will be paralyzed for a short time. One can use this opportunity to deal more damage to it and finish the fight.
Recommended Team compositions after defeating the Narwhal boss
- Pyro DPS: Use a Pyro character such as Lyney, Xiangling, or Klee as your main damage dealer, as they can deal consistent Pyro damage and trigger Vaporize reactions with the boss’s Hydro attacks. You can also use Bennett as a healer and Pyro support, and Zhongli as a shield provider and Geo support. The fourth slot can be filled by a Pneuma or Ousia character such as Lyney, Lynette, Furina, or Navia.
- Cryo DPS: Use a Cryo character such as Ganyu, Ayaka, or Eula as your main damage dealer, as they can deal high Cryo damage and trigger Frozen and Shatter reactions with the boss’s Hydro attacks. You can also use Diona as a healer and Cryo support, and Zhongli as a shield provider and Geo support. The fourth slot can be filled by a Pneuma or Ousia character such as Lyney, Lynette, Furina, or Navia.
- Anemo DPS: Use an Anemo character such as Xiao, Kazuha, or Venti as your main damage dealer, as they can deal high Anemo damage and trigger Swirl reactions with the boss’s Hydro and Electro attacks. You can also use Jean as a healer and Anemo support, and Zhongli as a shield provider and Geo support. The fourth slot can be filled by a Pneuma or Ousia character such as Lyney, Lynette, Furina, or Navia.

After beating the All-Devouring Narwhal boss, players can claim rewards by using 60 Original Resin (or 30 for the first 3 Weekly Boss claims of the week) to open the Ley Line Blossom. The rewards include:
