Genshin Impact has recently released the new Version 4.0 “As Light Rain Falls Without Reason” and with it comes the brand new Nation of Fontaine filled with abundant content. With a new Version to kick-start off comes new Abilities for our Main Character, the Traveler as they resonate with each Element and gain new abilities. Fontaine is the nation of Hydro, and as such we have finally unlocked the Hydro Element for our Traveler to use for fighting and even exploration. This guide will provide a detailed breakdown of how the Hydro Traveler abilities work and how to play them overall in Genshin Impact.
Genshin Impact Hydro Traveler Guide: Abilities description
Talent upgrade priority
Elemental skill > Elemental burst > Normal attack
The majority of their damage comes from their Elemental Skill (Hold Version). Afterwards, players must prioritize Burst and then maybe Normal Attack.
Normal Attack: Foreign Stream
Normal Attack
Performs up to 5 rapid strikes.
Charged Attack
Consumes a certain amount of Stamina to unleash 2 rapid sword strikes.
Plunging Attack
Plunges from mid-air to strike the ground below, damaging opponents along the path and dealing AoE DMG upon impact.
Elemental skill: Aquacrest Saber

Unleashes a torrent that can cleanse the world.
Press
Sends a Torrent Surge forward that will deal Hydro DMG to opponents it comes into contact with.
Hold
Enter Aiming Mode and constantly fire off Dewdrops in the direction in which you are aiming, dealing Hydro DMG to opponents they hit.
When the skill ends, it will send a Torrent Surge forward that will deal Hydro DMG to opponents it comes into contact with.
Suffusion: When using the Hold configuration of this skill, if the Traveler’s HP is higher than 50%, the DMG dealt by Dewdrops will increase based on the Traveler’s Max HP, and the Traveler will lose a fixed amount of HP every second.
Arkhe: Pneuma
At certain intervals, after using Torrent Surge, this skill will unleash a Spiritbreath Thorn that pierces opponents, dealing with Pneuma-aligned Hydro DMG.
Elemental burst: Rising Waters

It unleashes a slow-moving floating bubble that deals continuous Hydro DMG to nearby opponents.
Ascension 1 passive: Spotless Waters
After the Dewdrop fired by the Hold Mode of the Aquacrest Saber hits an opponent, a Sourcewater Droplet will be generated near to the Traveler. If the Traveler picks it up, they will restore 7% HP.
1 Droplet can be created this way every second, and each use of Aquacrest Saber can create 4 Droplets at most.
Ascension 4 passive: Clear Waters
If HP has been consumed via Suffusion while using the Hold Mode Aquacrest Saber, the Torrent Surge at the skill’s end will deal Bonus DMG equal to 45% of the total HP the Traveler has consumed in this skill use via Suffusion.
The maximum DMG Bonus that can be gained this way is 5,000.
Genshin Impact Hydro Traveler Guide: Abilities explained
In this guide in Genshin Impact, we will breakdown the abilities of Hydro Traveler in-game and how they will affect the gameplay
Normal Attack: Foreign Stream
Deals normal Physical DMG to enemies. Not something that you would use constantly.
Elemental skill: Aquacrest Saber
The Press Skill launched a Torrent Surge that deals Hydro DMG, applies, Hydro, and generates 3 to 4 Hydro Particles with a 10-second cooldown. This is not much for a one-time use of the skill so the ability requires you to use the Hold Version of the Elemental Skill instead. Holding the Skill locks the Hydro Traveler in a stationary place and after a charge-up time, they will rapidly fire Dewdrops to deal Hydro damage. Then the Skill will finish it off with a Torrent Surge after pressing the Hold version for 6 seconds. It ends early if you let go of the Skill and this will still fire the Torrent Surge. The Skill has a special ICD (Internal Cooldown) where it can apply Hydro at every 1.7 seconds to an enemy and can potentially result in up to four instances of Hydro application on an Enemy in its entire 6 seconds of duration.
Just like the new Fontaine playable characters or any new upcoming Fontaine-related characters, Hydro Traveler also has new mechanics that are limited to the Nation’s kit. First off, the Hydro Traveler has a Suffusion ability where if the Traveler has more than 50% HP, the Dewdrop damage will increase based on their Max HP, in return the Traveler will lose 4% of their Max HP every second.
Lastly, Hydro Traveler can inflict Pneuma damage which helps inflict special effects on Ousia-aligned enemies or help with Exploration in Fontaine.
Elemental burst: Rising Waters
The Burst releases a Hydro ball that moves forward and deals Hydro damage to enemies that it passes. The ball lasts on-field for 4 seconds with a 20-second cooldown.
Ascension 1 Passive: Spotless Waters
In the Ascension 1 Passive, up to four droplets can be generated from the Hydro Traveler’s Hold Skill which can be picked up for healing. Note that only the Traveler can use and pick it up to regain their HP.
Ascension 4 Passive: Clear Waters
From the Passive, the final Torrent Surge hit of the Hold version of the Elemental Skill will deal bonus damage equal to 45% of how much HP was consumed during suffusion. The total maximum of possible Base DMG bonuses is 5,000.
Genshin Impact Hydro Traveler Guide: Playstyle
Hydro Traveler can be played as a SUB-DPS, or Main DPS role depending on how you want to play them. Since the Normal Attacks are useless, you would want to focus on dishing out damage using their Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst. To start off, use Hydro Traveler’s Elemental Skill by using the Hold version. Aim at the targeted Enemies and deal Hydro DMG/apply Hydro.

Afterward, try to get their Burst back up by switching in and out of characters to gain Energy Particles since the Burst cost is 80. Once the Burst is up, use their Elemental Burst to deal Hydro DMG. Then again use the Hold version of the Elemental Skill. Their kit is tied in a way that makes it possible to easily switch in and out of character to provide Hydro application.
Final Thoughts
Hydro Traveler is quite an underwhelming character to use and it is obvious that the Developers have not tried to optimally make their kit as well as they did for Dendro Traveler. Aside from providing the Ousia/Pneuna mechanics that are integrated into their kit, Hydro Traveler as of now is not a great or viable unit to use in your roster. Their Elemental Skill keeps them at a stationary position where you cannot let go of your Skill, allowing ample time for Interruption and having no Interruption Resistance.
