Blue Archive hit by Koyukification hack; Nexon assures security and offers compensation

Seems like playful mischief, yet still a serious breach!

Story Highlights
  • Blue Archive’s global servers were briefly hacked on August 31, causing odd banners, Koyuki and Miku in cafés, and unusual YouTube content being displayed.
  • The incident only hit Blue Archive’s global servers under Nexon, while the Japanese version run by Yostar was unaffected.
  • You can claim a special compensation package until September 8, featuring recruitment tickets, AP, coins, credits, and more.

Nexon’s popular tactical RPG, Blue Archive, recently faced an unusual hack that forced the global servers into temporary maintenance. However, Nexon has since confirmed that no player data or financial information was ever at risk and has provided compensation to the community.

Blue Archive’s Koyukification and Nexon’s quick response to the incident

On August 31, the game’s global servers were briefly compromised, causing unusual changes. The community suddenly saw Koyuki and even Miku taking over, with banners displaying 3D Models, cafes filled with endless versions, and even the info page showed “nihahahaha,” Koyuki’s signature laugh.

After this situation spread like wildfire on social media, Nexon quickly rolled out maintenance. The downtime lasted a few hours before things were restored, and everyone soon began referring to the incident as Koyukification. By September 1, the company shared the findings of the investigation into the incident.

In a follow-up notice, Nexon explained that the hack was from altered settings, redirecting to “45.94.31.77 (Netherlands), which caused the issue.” It was more playful than harmful. That said, they confirmed that “players’ accounts, game data, and payment information were not affected.

Nexon strengthens security and offers compensation for global players

After the incident, Nexon shared that the issue came from external access and unauthorized changes to client settings stored on its Content Delivery Network. While Koyuki and Miku were displayed abnormally, the team stated that “these environmental settings only affected the client-side content display.

To prevent this from happening again, Nexon has strengthened its security protocols and limited access to authorized entities. The company is now working with the Korea Internet & Security Agency and has also promised “stronger security measures such as penetration testing and bug bounty programs.

As an apology, they’re also giving out a special compensation package, which you can obtain until September 8. The rewards include 10 Recruitment Tickets, 500 AP, 150 Tactical Challenge Coins, 7 Lesson Tickets, 300,000 Credit Points, and more. I’m really impressed with how quickly they resolved it.
