ByteDance, the company behind the popular video-sharing app TikTok, has officially welcomed Zhang Yunfan as the new CEO of MOONTON Games, and as a result, ByteDance’s gaming division enters phase two.
The new CEO emphasis on long-term action and patience in development
This was known a couple of weeks ago when the appointment was under the intention that this new leadership leads ByteDance’s strategic shift of strengthening video gaming operations. The Mobile Legends: Bang Bang creator was acquired by ByteDance in 2021.

Coming to the official updates, on May 31, ByteDance’s gaming division announced new personnel changes including Zhang Yunfan being in charge of MOONTON operations. Speaking of his resume, he was the former president of Animal Rumble creator Perfect World’s gaming business. Various business lines, including Oasis Studio and Jiangnan Studio, will now report to Zhang Yunfan.
In a letter, Zhang Yunfan recalled the past five years of ByteDance’s gaming business with all the successes and setbacks. Zhang mentioned the start of the second phase for the gaming division of ByteDance, emphasizing the criteria of long-term efforts and patience in development, underlining making “fun games for users” but warned against the anxiety of metrics overshadowing their work.
Nuverse might see merging with MOONTON as part of its restructuring
With this appointment, Yuan Jing has officially resigned as CEO of MOONTON Technology but will remain to oversee operations as a consultant for half a year at least.

The future developments are something to look forward to, as there might be even possibilities that ByteDance’s Nuverse gaming brand might be merging with MOONTON which was in the plans to be restructured during the former’s announcement of exiting from the gaming industry.
From rumors of it actively seeking buyers for MOONTON which the company later denied to the extended efforts of pushing its foothold in the gaming scene, the Chinese gaming giant might look to change the face of the gaming industry in the long run.
