- North Korea has its own Clash of Clans knockoff called Fortress Defense, spotted by a Redditor.
- It likely works on North Korea’s intranet, since the original game requires an internet connection.
Knock-off versions of games aren’t exactly rare. Big names in the industry always attract fakes, pulling in players who are curious to try different takes on their favorite titles. But what if I told you North Korea has its knock-off version of Clash of Clans? Sounds unbelievable, right? Well, it’s real.
The game looks nearly identical to Clash of Clans, with similar bases, resources, and CWL medals
A Redditor who recently visited North Korea made a surprising discovery where locals were playing a knockoff version of Clash of Clans. The game, which roughly translates to Fortress Defense looks almost identical to Supercell’s classic strategy game but with a few differences.
Now, I can draw a few similarities and point out the common aspects. I can see the bases are somewhat the same in multiple TH levels, resources are also the same, and there are even CWL medals and the shop. The art of the army troops looks different, but I’m guessing the playstyle likely sticks to the traditional formula.
Since Clash of Clans requires an internet connection, it’s no surprise that a homegrown version exists. After all, China has a separate gaming ecosystem, so it wouldn’t be shocking if North Korea followed a similar path. But this might work with the intranet connection. Still, pretty cool.
I have so many questions here. Is Fortress Defense a standalone copy, or does North Korea have its underground gaming scene? How did they manage to recreate Clash of Clans so accurately if the original game might have never even been available there?

Either way, it’s a rare glimpse into the country’s take on mobile gaming, and it makes you wonder what other knockoff games might be hiding behind. Well, if you ever plan on taking a trip there, do me a favor, and tell me. I need answers, okay?
