- Grand Warden arrives as the new Ruler with the Shield Sponsor ability to Merge Tactics.
- Shield Modifiers arrives as a new addition, which will be triggering effects when shields break.
A new season of Merge Tactics is here in Clash Royale with Season 8, the first since the extension of the season timeline with the arrival of Season 7. Here’s everything you need to know about the new season, regarding the new Ruler, added troops, modifiers, and more.
Clash Royale Merge Tactics Season 8 Update explained
New Ruler: Grand Warden
Grand Warden joins Season 8 as the newest Ruler, built around shields and keeping your units alive longer in fights. His ability, Shield Sponsor, gives a shield to the lowest HP% ally at 5 seconds and again at 15 seconds.

The second shield has an added effect, so when it breaks, it hits enemies in a 3-tile radius. He also comes with a full reward track on Starsteel Road. By collecting his Ruler Cards, you unlock skins like Dark Warden and Gilded Warden, along with new confetti effects. Elixir Loong also gets fresh cosmetics on the same track.
Returning Troops and Expanded Pool
No troops are removed this time, so the pool is bigger than before. That alone makes matches feel less predictable, since you won’t see the same setups every game.
3-Elixir Troops
| Troop | Traits | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Executioner | Ace, Hinder | Throws a boomerang axe that hits enemies across multiple hexes |
| Royal Ghost | Assassin, Undead | Turns invisible every few seconds, making him harder to target |
4-Elixir Troops
| Troop | Traits | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Bandit | Ace, Assassin | Dashes through enemies, dealing damage and briefly stunning them |
| Princess | Noble, Hinder | Attacks from long range and deals splash damage in a small area |
With more troops available, Elixir per round has been increased to 5. If you’re using Elixir Loong, that goes up to 6, which makes it easier to build stronger boards earlier.

Trait thresholds have also been adjusted. Ace, Assassin, and Hinder now support 4-unit bonuses, while Noble and Undead can go up to 6-unit buffs with the right modifier active.
New Shield Modifiers
Season 8 introduces Shield Modifiers, which add effects when shields break instead of just when units are placed.
| Modifier | League | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Rage Shield | Bronze III | Grants +50% hit and movement speed to nearby allies for 8 seconds |
| Slowdown Shield | Silver II | Reduces enemy hit and movement speed by 35% for 8 seconds |
| Star Shield | Gold II | Levels up the unit and nearby allies |
| Lava Shield | Diamond | Deals damage over time based on enemy max HP |
These work especially well with Grand Warden since he’s constantly giving out shields during battle.

Additional Modifiers
A few more modifiers have been added this season, focusing more on scaling and rewards for specific builds.
| Modifier | League | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Winners Gonna Win | Bronze II | Winning a round gives +2 Elixir |
| 3-Star Fantasy | Silver I | 3-star troops gain +100% HP and +50% damage |
| Trait Gift | Silver II | Each active Trait gives +1 Elixir at round end |
| We Are the Champions | Gold I | 5-Elixir troops gain +50% HP and +30% damage |
