Digimon: Source Code reveals gameplay at ChinaJoy 2023

A Digimon experience is coming!

Digimon: Source Code is an upcoming RPG from Bandai Namco for mobile that has unveiled its gameplay at the ChinaJoy 2023. From the initial impressions watching the gameplay, the game will feature creatures from the universe while employing a turn-based gameplay system.

Digimon: Source Code aims to bank on the successful Digimon IP

As the name suggests, the game will be banking on the popular Digimon IP. Digital Monsters or in short Digimon was one of the most popular franchises over two decades, we have seen various forms of media of the franchise since its initial introduction in 1997, including anime series, movies, video games, trading card games, and more. The animated series, Digimon Adventure, in particular, holds a special place in the hearts of many 90s and early 2000s kids.

If we take a trip down memory lane to two years ago, we might recall discussions about this game during the announcement of its closed beta test in China. In late 2021, the developers announced the opening of the CBT without many details, and surprisingly went cold for two years before the gameplay was unveiled at the ChinaJoy 2023.

From the descriptions, Digimon: Source Code is a turn-based RPG. Emphasizing speed, in each turn, all units take action, and Digimon has various moves, including basic attacks, evasions, and special attacks that require energy from their pool. The synergy between Digimon is crucial, as certain combinations can trigger powerful team attacks, rewarding players for thoughtful team building and recreating iconic moments from the anime.

Furthermore, players can fuse and Digivolve Digimon into their final forms, like Omnimon and other powerful fusions. The game boasts over 300 Digimon upon launch, including favorites from various series featured on the game’s cover, such as Omegamon and Alphamon. Given the popularity of Digimon, we can expect the game to have a healthy run.

ChinaJoy 2023 offered a promising preview of the upcoming Digimon game

During ChinaJoy, attendees had the opportunity to experience a fully playable preview of Digimon: Source Code, which allowed them to explore two levels of the game. The demo featured prominent Digimon such as WarGreymon, Metal Garurumon, Metal Seadramon, and more, showcasing their impressive abilities, combos, and team-based fusion mechanics in action.

As of now, Digimon: Source Code is exclusively available in China. Players from the region have the option to pre-register for the game on its official website here, where there’s also a milestone campaign running. Upon its launch, the game will be accessible on both iOS and Android platforms. No details are revealed about the global launch yet.
