Things are going great for Epic Games as the company’s highly awaited multiplatform store Epic Games Store and the popular battle royale title Fortnite will be hitting the iOS platform in the UK in the second half of 2025 and Japan in late 2025.
The recent DMCC law in the UK brings a level playing field for app stores
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC), which received the green light in the UK on May 24, 2024, aims to establish a new regulatory environment for digital markets. It gives new powers to the Competition and Markets Authority in the regulation of firms, including app stores, for fair competition and to stop anti-competitive practices.
This will bring a more level playing field for app stores and other digital platforms. If you do not know how this helps Epic Store, well, let me remind you of the Epic versus Apple legal battles. Even though the battles began in August 2020 when Fortnite was removed from the App Store and Google Play Store, this January, the game was confirmed to return on iOS in Europe through the Epic Games Store.
However, things turned sour later in the first week of March, the comeback went off track as Apple terminated the Epic Games Developer Account, which Epic Games had severely opposed as an “unjustified excuse”. However, Apple had to face the backlash as the European Commission probed Apple over unexpected termination, hence making Apple change its decision.
Meanwhile, for Japan, this comes after the rumours that Apple might have to allow third-party app stores in the country, which circulated back in May when it was mentioned that the bill for the same was being discussed in parliament and might come into effect by the end of 2025.
Now, with these developments, Epic’s idea of having a level playing field will be coming true soon and hence will be getting its products to iOS. Speaking of releases for Epic Games Store and Fortnite in the UK, no dates are mentioned but expect July to December 2025 as the timeline for release.
