In 2021 alone, Tencent’s MOBA title Honor of Kings, also known as Arena of Valor, has acquired more than $2 billion across the App Store and the Google Play Store, making its total revenue stand at a whopping $10 billion since its launch in 2015. With the lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been investing both of their time and money into video games more than ever.
This surge was especially noticed globally across the video games in the MOBA sub-genre with an average of 43% monthly revenue increase in 2020. And to top it off, this sub-genre has noticed substantial growth in its average monthly revenue by 14% to over $300 million as of 2021 which is highly dominated by the cheering popularity of Honor of Kings.
About Honor of Kings
Honor of Kings is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) created by TiMi Studio Group and distributed by Tencent Games for the Chinese market’s iOS and Android mobile platforms. Honor of Kings was formerly known as League of Kings, but it was renamed in response to Riot Games‘ objections about potential intellectual property infringement from League of Legends, another popular MOBA in the West.
When Honor of Kings was published in 2015, it quickly became popular in mainland China, influencing a worldwide adaptation of the game, Arena of Valor, which was released in October 2016. Honor of Kings had over 100 million active daily players and over 200 million monthly active players in 2020, making it one of the most popular and highest-grossing games of all time.

Following Honor of Kings, we have Brawl Stars of Supercell is in the second position in terms of revenue from player spending, amassing over $320 million. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, which acquired $220 million from January to August 2021, comes third.
