Netflix announces $82.7 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. following Discovery Global separation

A massive move!

Story Highlights
  • Netflix to acquire Warner Bros. for $82.7 billion after Discovery Global completes separation.
  • Acquisition expected to close in 2026 pending regulatory approvals and shareholder agreements.
  • Opens huge potential for new Netflix mobile games using DC, Harry Potter and other franchises.

Netflix just dropped one of the biggest entertainment surprises in years as it confirmed a massive $82.7 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. The deal will go through once Discovery Global officially splits off in 2026, as announced in June this year.

The deal brings HBO, HBO Max, and major franchises under Netflix’s ownership

Once completed, Netflix will take ownership of Warner Bros.’ entire entertainment ecosystem, including its film and TV studios, HBO, HBO Max, and an enormous library of well-known franchises. Netflix says it plans to keep Warner Bros.’ current operations running, including theatrical releases.

Sharing that their mission has always been to “entertain the world”, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, added: “By combining Warner Bros.’ incredible library of shows and movies with our culture-defining titles, we’ll be able to do that even better. Together, we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling.”

David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, shared: “Today’s announcement combines two of the greatest storytelling companies in the world to bring to even more people the entertainment they love to watch the most. By coming together with Netflix, we will ensure people everywhere will continue to enjoy the world’s most resonant stories for generations to come.”

Now, for us as mobile gamers, this is where things get exciting. Netflix has been slowly building its mobile gaming library, thanks to the Netflix Games space, but this deal gives it access to universes that are basically a goldmine for mobile projects.

That list spans the DC Universe, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, the Monsterverse featuring Godzilla, and many others from both the Warner Bros. and HBO universes. There are a lot more experiments and projects that await us, having expertise from top entertainment companies together.

At the time of writing, the deal now needs regulatory checks, shareholder approval, and will only close after Discovery Global becomes its own company. After the split, Discovery Global will continue with entertainment, sports, and news television brands around the world.
