Red Dead Redemption on mobile without a Netflix subscription feels like a heist, with you being the victim

Wallet burner!

Story Highlights
  • Red Dead Redemption has arrived on Mobile.
  • RDR has two separate versions on mobile: a regular paid version and another one under Netflix subscription.
  • While the RDR Netflix version is fine, the premium version is very costly.

Red Dead Redemption has finally made its way onto mobile, and honestly, this is exciting. Netflix Games rolled out the title on Android and iOS, marking the first time Rockstar’s legendary Western ever galloped onto smartphones.

As someone who already has a Netflix subscription, I didn’t think twice, and I have already installed the title and stepped into the world of the outlaws. However, the experience for those who didn’t have a subscription was entirely different, and I think the title might have explained things for you.

The non-subscribers face a surprisingly high standalone purchase price for Red Dead Redemption

After recommending the game to a friend, expecting him to share my enthusiasm, I was met with a negative answer after a while. The reason was that he had to purchase it. Well, fair enough.

While I couldn’t share my password (looking at you, Netflix), I did ask him what the big deal was. His immediate response was Are you crazy?which, honestly, caught me off guard, until I checked the store listing myself.

There it was, sitting boldly beneath the Netflix logo, a $39.99 purchase tag for those without a subscription. Nearly forty bucks. For mobile. Sure, I get the logic: one-time purchase versus a monthly Netflix subscription.

But when you compare that price to what you get via Netflix, well, you can’t, it is way too pricey. What makes it even funnier is the comparison with other platforms. On PC, specifically Steam, Red Dead Redemption sits comfortably at $24.99. It is running an offer at the time of writing, still 15 dollars cheaper.

Well, for some, they didn’t even need a subscription as unofficial APKs have already surfaced. But pricing aside, the game itself is impressive, hence you kind of don’t want to miss out on the full Red Dead Redemption experience.

If Netflix’s goal here was to reel in more subscribers, well, it worked, I would say. At least they got a subscriber from my friend. If you’re already a subscriber, just march over to your Google Play Store or App Store and dive in.

And if you’re rolling in cash and allergic to subscriptions, feel free to buy the game outright. That said, I personally believe that money could be invested in far more meaningful places, like a generous deposit into my account. You know where to find me.
