RPCS3, an open-source PS3 emulator’s official alpha build is now available on Android

PS3 emulation on Android will soon be a reality!

Story Highlights
  • RPCS3 is a multi-platform, open-source PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger, developed in C++, that runs on Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS.
  • DH, one of RPCS3's lead developers, is actively working on the project and has released the alpha build APK on GitHub.
  • This is an alpha release and lacks many settings, but you can still add games after installing the PS3 firmware.

DHrpcs3 has announced the launch of the official alpha test build of their PS3 emulator, RPCS3, for Android. Founded by programmers DH and Hykem in May 2011, and publicly released in June 2012 on other platforms, this multi-platform PS3 emulator is finally coming to mobile.

The development of RPCS3 was led by DH and Hykem, with DH now releasing the alpha build #1 for the Android app on his GitHub. You will be able to play a host of PS3 titles on your mobile with RPCS3

RPCS3 is a multi-platform, open-source Sony PlayStation 3 emulator and debugger available for Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, and finally Android. This newly released alpha build is still in its early stages and requires high-end devices to run, as noted by SenhorLinguica.

Do note this is just an alpha release, and it currently lacks configuration settings, resolution or graphic options, controller mapping, and app behavior settings. The only available functions you can perform are adding a game and installing the required PS3 firmware file.

How to download and install RPCS3’s Alpha Build APK and PS3 Firmware on Android

Follow these given steps to download RPCS3’s Alpha Build APK on your Android device and install the PS3 Firmware:

  • First, go to RPCS3’s GitHub page on your browser.
  • Next, scroll down and tap on the Releases option.
  • Under Assets, you will find the emulator.
  • Now, download rpcs3.apk and install it on your device.
  • Visit PlayStation’s official website.
  • There, scroll down and click on Update using Comptur, and download the PS3 firmware.
  • Now, open the RPCS3 emulator and go to Options.
  • Click on Install Firmware and select the downloaded firmware from your device.
  • Now, you can finally add games by clicking on the Plus + icon.

With the alpha build now available, the project looks promising as one of the founders is actively working on the Android port. While we can’t expect good stability and performance right from the start, the future of emulating PS3 games on mobile still looks bright.
