Tencent acquires a major stake in Shift Up, the studio behind Goddess of Victory: Nikke

The Chinese giant is making moves to deal with halted growth at home!

Tencent has now made a major move to touch on the global market as they have acquired a 20% stake in Shift Up, the studio behind the hit sci-fi RPG shooter filled with action, Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, making them the second biggest shareholder with the studio.

Tencent continues its conquest of the global gaming market after acquiring Shift Up

Tencent’s plans to change its merger and acquisition strategy were first reported back in October as it seemed like the corporation’s growth in the Chinese mainland was starting to stagnate due to a multitude of reasons, one of which was the regulations being imposed by the government. Additionally, they were competing with global giants like Microsoft and Sony, and Shift Up seems like a good investment considering just how quickly the game made its way to the top of the charts.

It has been reported via The South China Morning Post (SCMP) that this stake was acquired before the game was released a short while ago in November although we’re lacking specifics. Since then, the game has gone on to raise more than a hundred million in revenue.

It must however be noted that this isn’t Tencent’s first rodeo or major success in the global market as we’ve seen just how well titles like Call of Duty: Mobile, Honor of Kings, and PUBG Mobile have done. International investments seem to be what they have in mind now as they aim to remedy recent losses and establish themselves in the larger playing field. It should be interesting to see where they go with this and how the rest of the competitive sphere reacts to their growing involvement.
