We all know that mobile games can be addictive, and there are several methods to tackle them. While dealing with this addiction is challenging, when it involves spending large sums of money, it is more dangerous. Well, someone did show up among this type as a man from Japan has blown his grandmother’s $250,000 on a mobile MMORPG over some time, and as hilarious as it sounds, it is something that needs to be taken seriously.
The 31-year-old’s sister shared the details via X, revealing a shocking purchase list
As mentioned earlier, this incident involves a 31-year-old man from Japan who withdrew approximately ¥40 million ($250,000) from his 82-year-old grandmother’s account. The funds were transferred to his account and were lavishly spent entirely on mobile game purchases, and a minute-long video shared in the same thread by the sister showing the printed receipts of the purchases was plenty.
The man’s younger sister, seeking advice on the matter, expressed her frustration and helplessness on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating that her brother claims it is a civil matter and believes he cannot be held criminally liable. She also mentions that she is desperate to recover the stolen money and ensure her brother faces appropriate consequences.
The game in question, 魔剣伝説, translated as “Magic Sword Legend”, is a MMORPG developed by SPOTLIGHT NETWORK LIMITED. This game features gacha elements, and titles with these features are pretty tempting to pull some top characters. But again, this game doesn’t even seem that good. At the end of the day, even with a mediocre product, the developers are still raking in good money while sitting comfortably in their cozy chairs.
Cases like this underscore a major issue and a dark side of gaming addiction
A large amount of money being blown is not somewhat new, I have covered news like this. Last year, a 13-year-old girl from China astonishingly spent a staggering $64,000 on mobile games within just four months, which left her family with less than a dollar in their possession. A couple of years back there was also another case where a 16-year-old spent $12K on PUBG Mobile.

Coming to the details, it is disappointing to see amongst these kids that a grown man who should have had responsibilities at this age is engaging in such irresponsible behavior. This incident underscores a major issue and a dark side of gaming addiction.
It’s a stark reminder that the problem isn’t limited to kids; adults can fall prey to it as well. Hopefully, this will be the last time I cover such a troubling scenario.
