Twitch confirms it has been hacked; source code and user information leaked

One of the world’s biggest streaming site has faced a major breach

Twitch TV, which is one of the world’s largest video game streaming sites and also a subsidiary of Amazon.Inc, got into some big trouble after it was hacked and major source code along with the information of its users was leaked. It all started on the internet forum called 4chan, a forum known for large-scale trolling operations and a lot of other content that is way stranger and unusual than other internet forums.

Twitch later confirmed this themselves and said that they are still trying to figure out the extent of the damage but from what the leaks look like, this is arguably among the biggest leaks we’ve seen in a while. So if there were any doubts about the validity of the leaks, they’re now seemingly legitimate.

Source code, creator payouts, and more leaked

It has also been confirmed that the leaked files contain creator payouts from 2019 till now, the entirety of twitch.tv’s source code, information about an unreleased video game distribution service, and more. Also, the files provided right now are actually titled “Twitch Leaks Part I”, which means that there could be more information that hasn’t been publicly released yet.

Twitch hacked
Post from the alleged hackers leaking the information

This is a really serious situation as a lot of user information could have been leaked including addresses and billing information among other extremely private details. The other scary aspect is that this isn’t just any website. This is Twitch that has been targeted and it’s owned by Amazon, an international conglomerate that is one of the biggest organizations out there. This just goes to show how vulnerable even big companies can be against these attacks.

Till the time more leaks don’t come out or Twitch themselves don’t confirm anything, it’s going to be hard to say just how concerned users should be. However, it’s recommended that you change your password on Twitch and enable 2 Factor Authentication if you use the website.
