PUBG Mobile Esports tournaments plan to have a total prize pool of $14 million in 2021

Popular Battle Royale game PUBG Mobile is at its absolute peak in user engagement in 2020, especially during the pandemic, and the latest news will confirm the same. While talking about their Esports program and the upcoming events for 2021, the PUBG Mobile developers have unveiled their esports project, which in total, plan to have a whopping prize pool of $14 million, thrice the amount than this year’s pool. With this announcement, there are speculations of many interesting events and more competitors in the next year.


PUBG Mobile Esports 2020-21: Official announcement

The announcement was made during the opening of the PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC), which kicked off recently. PUBG Mobile Global Esports Director James Yang, in a video message that was uploaded on YouTube, unveiled the road map for the game’s esports project undertaken in the year 2021. Also, with this announcement, the $14 million prize pool in the PUBG Mobile esports project is reportedly the highest ever in mobile esports history.

While discussing the potential 2021 project, James Yang also talked about the year 2020. He said: 

The year 2020 has been a special year for us, not only because we got the highest viewership but also as we’ve expanded in all aspects and completed our upgrade from the amateur to the pro ecosystem, but this was only the beginning. We have huge ambitions to become a Tier 1 esports brand and stand shoulder to shoulder with the biggest games in the world, not just to break boundaries within mobile esports.

He also added: “The huge increase in the prize pool is representative of the growth we foresee in 2021. In western regions, in particular, there’s huge room for expansion. I couldn’t be more excited about the future of esports of PUBG Mobile. This year, we’ve been cooperating closely with our sponsors- Qualcomm Technologies, Mountain Dew, and OnePlus, and we look forward to continuing the amazing partnerships with them and with more next year.”


PUBG Mobile Esports: Other plans & announcements

Seven new PMPL Regions announced

In addition to the big prize pool announcement, the developers also gave us insights on how the Esports tournaments will be conducted in 2021. PUBG will introduce seven new PUBG Mobile Pro League (PMPL) regions, which are:

  • CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States)
  • Turkey
  • Western Europe
  • Arabia
  • North America
  • Latin America
  • Brazil.

The newly established leagues are expected to be complementary to those that already exist in South and Southeast Asia. It will follow a similar pattern to this year, with PMCOs (PUBG Mobile Club Open) and PMPLs (PUBG Mobile Pro League) being split into two seasons with the PUBG Mobile Global Championship (PMGC) that will be taking place at the end of the year. In expansion, the 2021 season would be divided into four quarters, with Q1 and Q3 having PMCOs and Q2 and Q4 to see the PMPLs being played.

In addition, PUBG Mobile Esports will see a new event introduced in 2021 titled the PUBG Mobile Invitationals, which will take place in the Summer and will be hosted by top pro teams around the world.

PUBG Mobile Esports hit some new milestones in 2020

Among other announcements, Yang also expressed several PUBG Mobile milestones which are listed below:

  • PUBG Mobile Global Championship has recorded over 100 million watch hours in the year 2020. Comparing to last year’s stats, it is double the count.
  • More than 1 million players across the globe watched the Summer World League.
  • More than 120,000 teams registered for the PMCO.
  • Total prize pool dedicated to esports events in 2020 accounts for up to 5 USD.
