The new PL season is edging closer by the day, and Fantasy Premier League is back online. All FPL managers have been given an automatic wildcard so you can twist and alter your team as many times as you like before the Gameweek 1 deadline. As usual, the initial team selection is one of the most thoughtful processes of the entire season, with new players about and changes in price and position. In this article, we will outline all these different changes, as well as give insight and an overview as to what your teams could look like ahead of the FPL 2021/22 Gameweek 1 fixtures.
FPL 2021/22 Overview: Price Changes
The Premier League always reset the prices for all FPL assets ahead of the first gameweek. These new prices are set based on previous season stats as well as the potential to actually be a starting XI player. Some changes may also be linked to their positional changes, as the average prices between positions vary in FPL.
Note: The following prices have been compared based on their ending price from the last season. Credit to FPL Replace for the tables of price rises/drops.
Major Price Rises
Club | Player | FPL 20-21 Price | FPL 21-22 Price | Position |
Arsenal | Smith Rowe | 4.2 | 5.5 | M |
Aston Villa | Grealish | 7.5 | 8.0 | M |
Aston Villa | Watkins | 6.3 | 7.5 | F |
Brighton | Trossard | 5.5 | 6.5 | M |
Chelsea | Mendy | 5.3 | 6.0 | G |
Crystal Palace | Mitchell | 3.8 | 4.5 | D |
Crystal Palace | Benteke | 5.5 | 6.5 | F |
Everton | Calvert-Lewin | 7.5 | 8.0 | F |
Leeds | Raphinha | 5.6 | 6.5 | M |
Leeds | Bamford | 6.6 | 8.0 | F |
Leicester | Iheanacho | 6.2 | 7.5 | F |
Liverpool | Jota | 6.9 | 7.5 | M |
Man City | Mahrez | 8.1 | 9.0 | M |
Man Utd | Fernandes | 11.3 | 12.0 | M |
Newcastle | Saint-Maximin | 5.2 | 6.5* | F |
Newcastle | Wilson | 6.5 | 7.5 | F |
Southampton | Ward Prowse | 5.9 | 6.5 | M |
Southampton | Adams | 5.7 | 7.0 | F |
Southampton | Armstrong | 5.5 | 6.0 | M |
Spurs | Kane | 11.9 | 12.5 | F |
West Ham | Antonio | 6.7 | 7.5 | F |
West Ham | Soucek | 5.2 | 6.0 | M |
Price rises are always irritating sights since the bargain buys from the last PL season are no longer bargains, for example, Bamford makes the drastic jump from 6.6 million to 8 million. However, if these players keep up the form, they could still be worthwhile. Some are still fairly decent bargains, such as Emile Smith-Rowe at 5.5 million. If he can sustain a starting place, he could be a brilliant pick. Kane and Bruno, after their brilliant performances from last season, are now 12/12.5 million respectively, much more expensive and so it will be difficult fitting multiple big-hitters in.
Major Price Drops
Club | Player | FPL 20-21 Price | FPL 21-22 Price | Position |
Arsenal | Aubameyang | 11.3 | 10.0* | F |
Everton | James | 7.7 | 7.0 | M |
Everton | Digne | 6.2 | 5.5 | D |
Wolves | Jimenez | 8.1 | 7.5 | F |
Aubameyang’s drop is quite heavy due to his on/off performances from last season, coupled with the position change. With Everton under new management, it is difficult to determine what kind of tactics will be in play, however, Lucas Digne at just 5.5 million seems like a brilliant price, considering they have a good set of starting fixtures too. Raul Jimenez dropped due to his head injury from last season, if he can hit the ground running again then 7.5 million would be a brilliant price for him too.
FPL 2021/22 Overview: Position Changes
Some players have been assigned different positions based on their placement in the last season. Here is a list of all the position changes ahead of the new season.
Aubameyang | ARS | £10.0m | MID | FWD |
---|---|---|---|---|
Dallas | LEE | £5.5m | DEF | MID |
Kouyate | CRY | £4.5m | MID | DEF |
Maitland-Niles | ARS | £5.5m | DEF | MID |
Ritchie | NEW | £5.0m | MID | DEF |
Saint-Maximin | NEW | £6.5m | MID | FWD |
There aren’t many standouts unfortunately, Aubameyang now at the forward role means he must gather good form to make him worth anywhere near the 10 million he is priced at since fewer points are given at this position. Dallas was a brilliant asset from last season, however, being a midfielder has diminished opportunities greatly. Allan Saint-Maximin has been reclassified as a forward as he played in a striker role for part of the last season. 6.5 million could make him a real bargain forward if he can gather form. Other than that, there aren’t many things to celebrate here.
FPL 2021/22 Overview: Promoted Teams and New Additions
The three teams promoted from last season are Norwich, Brentford, and Watford. All of these players have promising players in their squads and this is the best opportunity to have your research pay off. Quite a few of the best bargains throughout the FPL season come from these newly promoted sides, so you should try and pick some of these up early for the best value. In addition, new signings will also be moving about, so you should keep an eye on them.
Norwich City

This Norwich side has a very tough run of fixtures upcoming, so it’s best to keep watch rather than dive in early. Teemu Pukki at 6 million, Cantwell at 5.5 million, and Max Aarons at 4.5 million all seem cheap picks at first view. New signing Rashica also has potential from the wing too. However, as said earlier, Norwich has a very tough start, so early points are unlikely.
Brentford

A brilliant standout option is, of course, Ivan Toney at 6.5 million, who enjoyed a 40+ goal season in the Championship last year. His ownership is through the roof at this point, however, the price and starting fixtures look promising. Some other promising players are Pinnock and Raya both at 4.5 million.
Watford

The starting fixtures look quite good for Watford, and so some of these players may look quite appealing. Ismaila Sarr is the most expensive player at 6 million, and he could turn out brilliantly for FPL fans. Femenia could be a brilliant defensive pick at 4.5 million, and all the Watford strikers are priced quite cheaply too. There are loads of bargain opportunities here.
As with any Summer transfer window, rumors fly about left, right, and center. All clubs are looking to do some kind of business; Manchester United is splashing the cash, with Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane joining, and other rumored arrivals also hinted. Arsenal is looking at a huge team rebuild this season, and Spurs are in danger of losing grip on star striker Harry Kane. It isn’t just the new signings that could make good picks, they may also hint at position competition, tactic changes, and more. For example, Sancho’s arrival adds competition for Greenwood, and Emi Buendia at Aston Villa hints at a replacement for Jack Grealish who has joined Manchester City.
We will only have to wait for more information in this sector. Don’t hesitate to twist your team every now and then as you do have unlimited transfers ahead of Gameweek 1. Good luck!
