Honkai Star Rail: How to unlock six characters for free

Free characters to get you started!

Honkai Star Rail is the newest game released by HoYoverse, the developer of Genshin Impact. Unlike Genshin Impact, this game has a turn-based combat system with a level-based map system. Honkai Star Rail has a four-character team system with different elements and roles for each character. At the game’s highest level, things come down to strategy and taking advantage of the type to beat the enemy. It is a lot of fun, and the game gives you six different free characters by completing various tasks. In this Honkai Star Rail guide, we will go through how you can earn these six characters for free and incorporate them into your team.

How to get the six free characters in Honkai Star Rail

The game is generous enough to give you six different characters, even though you only need four to make the team. However, not all six characters are given to you at the start. You will have to progress through the game and do various tasks to claim your characters. Here is how you can get each of the characters in Honkai Star Rail.

1. Main Character

After completing the first part of the intro section of the game, you will be prompted to choose your main character between the male or female versions. No matter which version you choose, the skills you will get with the character will be the same. This is a five-star character and the first one you will get permanently in the game.

2. Herta

Herta, master of the Herta Space Station and member of the genius society, is an ice-type four-star character in Honkai Star Rail. You will not be getting her as soon as you start the game. But she is very easy to unlock. Keep progressing the story, and you will get a quest to test a simulated universe made by her. Complete this quest, and you will get yourself Herta, as a playable character for your team.

Taking one step further, you can continue to clear the simulated universe world to get more copies of her. World 2, 4, and 6 are guaranteed to give a copy of Herta which you can use to unlock her Eidolon.

3. Natasha

The brilliant underworld doctor, Natasha, is a really good healer in Honkai Star Rail. Since combat is a turn-based system, having a good healer on the team is very necessary.

Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about getting a healer, as you will be able to unlock Natasha from the Novice Experience permanent event. Keep doing the main quest until you complete the one called Lying in Rust. Upon completion of this quest, you will be able to claim her from this permanent event.

4. Qinque

Qinque is probably going to be your first quantum-type character while playing Honkai Star Rail if you didn’t get any five stars already. It will be a while before you can unlock this character since you need to be level 21 to do so.

But once you hit level 21 for your world, go and complete the memory stage up to stage 3. Then you will be able to claim this character from the permanent event.

5. March 7th

March 7th will be one of the first characters you will meet after taking control of the MC for this game. She is a support-type character that pairs well with any team. After completing the first part of the intro, you will automatically get her for your team.

6. Dan Heng

Dan Heng is another character you will get along with on March 7th in Honkai Star Rail. Both of them show up together and join your team together. While March 7th is more focused on support, Dan Heng is mainly a single-target DPS. He deals a lot of damage and is especially good for big boss fights.

That is all the characters you can get when you start playing Honkai Star Rail. This will have you make an alright starting team. As you play the game, you will get more than four and five stars from the wrap and expand your team further.
