Let’s start with the gameplay overview to help you get a clear idea of how the game works. The intro looks very cool as it makes a smooth jump from the arcade to inside the game, where you help the KOF fighters to victory. You can also boost iconic characters like Athena to clear missions faster.
Since it’s an idle title, the gameplay stays simple and relaxing. You can just tap on the guide missions to earn rewards, then upgrade your team one by one or in bulk, like 10x or 100x, and take down the bosses to progress. While I don’t enjoy idle titles much, it’s really nice to enjoy them without much grind.
As you move ahead, new Fighters become available, and you can form your dream team of up to five members from the Formation menu. Even though it’s idle, recruiting new allies and experimenting with different lineups makes it interesting.
There’s also an AD Removal option that lets you collect all ad-based rewards instantly, plus it activates your Daily Wish buffs automatically. The sad part is, you’ve to purchase it after the one-day trial. Speaking of Daily Wish, you can get cool buffs like Wolf’s Howl, which doubles your Fuel Gain from stages.
Introducing the Basics of THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK
Fighters
Here you unlock all the iconic Fighters from the KOF series, right from Iori Yagami, Orochi, to Kyo Kusanagi, Athena Asamiya, and many more. Moreover, each fighter comes in a unique style, like Shingo Yabuki from KOF ’98 or Yuri Sakazaki from KOF XIII, and so on.
They’re available in various synergies, including Spike, Fury, Rush, Solid, Corrosion, Endurance, and Deathblow, and are divided into tiers such as LE, UQ, EP, R, and N. In the Codex area, you can collect Power Up Rewards and unlock Account Growth Effects, and there’s a Photo Cards area too.
Lucky Ride
So, Lucky Ride is a special feature in-game where you can earn useful equipment through exciting Rides. Each ride gives you an equal chance to get one of the five rewards, and the ones you miss stay in the reward pool, and you can get them in the next Ride.
Once you collect the equipment, you can then equip up to twelve pieces to enhance your Total Combat Power. Besides this, you can also salvage extra or low-tier pieces to gain Star Badges and Player EXP. And the more you level up your Player and Lucky Ride levels, the better the equipment you can get.
Mini-games
Besides the main gameplay, you’ll also unlock a variety of fun mini-games as you progress. You start with the Starter Dungeon, and can gradually unlock the Elite Dungeon, Challenge, and Team Battle. The mini-games are as follows:
- Gold Rush: Here, you can earn Gold to increase your influence.
- Shadow Training Hall: This one helps you gather Fighter EXP to strengthen your team.
- City of Vengeance: Through this, you can collect Fuel for your Lucky Rides.
Missions
So, you can clear a variety of Daily, Weekly, and Repeat missions like Defeat Attackers, Clear Starter Dungeon, and so on to earn rewards, including Rubies, Fighter Tokens, 5m Speed Up Tickets, Offline Star Badge, Offline Fighter Badge, Fuel, Offline Gold, and Cushions.
Shop
The Shop is divided into four sections: Summon, Shop, Daily Shop, and Special Shop. In the Summon section, you can try your luck to summon Fighters and Photo Cards, in x1, x10, or x30 pulls, and level up your Summon Level to boost your odds for higher-grade Fighters and Photo Cards.
In the Shop section, you can purchase Starter Pack, Challenge Pack, Rubies, Merchandise, and more. The Daily Shop has Bonus and Premium options, where you can buy packs like Premium NESTS Lab Packs. And the Special Shop offers the Monthly Ad Removal, Premium Buff Monthly Perks, and Lifetime Perks Packs.
Events
You can also take on various events like the Stage Clearing Event, where you earn Rubies by clearing specific stages like Stage 50, Stage 80, and so on. And as you progress, you climb the rankings, and the top three earn impressive rewards, including the Token of Growth. You can use this in the Ranking Event Exchange Shop to purchase Orochi Leona, her Icon and Avatar Border, and more.
Pass
In the Pass section, you’ll find Stage Pass I, Fighter Evolution I, Player Level Passes I, and Photo Card Level Up Pass I. You can claim free rewards from the base tiers or purchase the passes for premium rewards. From here, you can obtain Fighter and Photo Card Tokens, Fuel, and Rubies from the base reward.

1. Keep Summoning Fighters and build a strong team
The first advice from my side is to keep summoning fighters whenever you get the chance in the Summon Section. Your main focus should be on unlocking LE or Legend Fighters like Yuri Sakazaki, as they’re very strong and carry you through the early stages. Build a strong team around them.
2. Complete your Daily and Weekly Missions
Never skip your daily and weekly missions, as the rewards are too good to miss, especially the Offline Star Badge, Offline Fighter Badge, and Offline Gold. You can keep your resources flowing even when you’re offline, and this is also one of the easiest ways to farm these rewards, as the missions are easy.
3. Focus on upgrading your Lucky Ride Level
The Lucky Ride lets you earn powerful equipment, which further helps you progress more easily. The Star Badges that you earn from salvaging equipment can be used to level up your Lucky Ride level, which increases your chance of obtaining rarer pieces. And I also recommend leveling the Player level, too, since it increases the max level of obtainable equipment.
4. Visit the Shop and grab Freebies
The best part about this game is that you earn a lot of free stuff from all sorts of places, including the Shop. Like by watching an Ad, you can get the Daily Ad Item Set, which includes Offline Fighter EXP, Gold, and Star Badge, Photo Card Token, and Fuel.
You can also earn 10 Fighter Tokens daily from the Premium Shop for free by watching an Ad, and 1000 Rubies per week from the Special Shop by purchasing it for free. So, this is also another great way to farm these resources.
5. Make the most out of Pass Rewards
Next, head to the Pass section to claim a variety of free rewards from all the Passes, like Stage Pass I, and so on. You can get different rewards for the different passes, and if you’re planning to play the game for a long while, some of these passes are not that costly.
6. Keep Leveling up your Fighters and even evolving them
The most important tip, however, is to keep leveling up these powerful fighters to dominate against any Boss. By leveling up, you can improve their Stats, Skills, and try to collect Fighter Cards to evolve them for better results. Evolving them also increases their Star Level effects.
Final Thoughts
THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is surprisingly a fun idle RPG that blends nostalgia with simple yet enjoyable gameplay. Maybe it’s nostalgia itself, but I personally liked collecting fighters from different KOF titles, experimenting with team formations, and steadily powering them up to defeat the bosses.
That said, as you progress and unlock more mini-games, the game can get a bit challenging. So to avoid that from happening, follow these tips I’ve provided and focus on building a balanced team, and make sure to keep leveling your Fighters, Player level, and even the Lucky Ride level.
