Well, there seems to be another case that has surfaced. In a concerning report, it has been revealed that a 13-year-old girl from China has astonishingly spent a staggering $64,000 on mobile games within just four months, leaving her family with less than a dollar in their possession.
The girl’s mother was unaware of the situation until alerted by a teacher
The girl is a secondary school student from Henan province in central China. Being a gaming addict, she used to spend from her mother’s debit card. The girl’s mother was first oblivious to the spending until a teacher alerted her mother expressing concerns about the girl’s potential addiction to online pay-to-play games due to her extensive phone usage during school.
To the mother’s shock, she would find only US$0.07 (0.5 yuan) in her account after she received the info. When confronted by her father, the girl admitted to spending US$17,000 (120,000 yuan) on purchasing games, an additional US$30,000 (210,000 yuan) on in-game purchases, and a staggering US$14,000 (100,000 yuan) on buying games for at least ten of her classmates.
As per SCMP, this news has quickly spread across social media, accompanied by a viral video where Wang, the girl’s mother, can be seen going through bank statements that outline every transaction her daughter made while paying for online games.
This disturbing situation highlights the risks connected with uncontrolled access to in-app purchases and serves as a strong reminder of the importance of appropriate management and parental guidance in children’s gaming activities. It is in the best interest of parents to keep an eye on the activities of their kids, especially under the age of 21.
