- Amazon is shutting down its Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025.
- The Appstore will remain functional on Fire TV and Fire Tablets.
After over a decade, Amazon has officially announced the shutdown of its Appstore for Android devices. The company has confirmed that the service will be discontinued on August 20, 2025. This marks the end of an alternative app marketplace competing with Google Play since 2011.
Amazon focuses on its ecosystem amid rising competition from alternative app stores
Developers can no longer submit new apps to the Amazon Appstore for Android, though they can still push updates for existing apps until the shutdown date. Alongside the store’s closure, Amazon is also discontinuing its virtual currency, Amazon Coins as of immediate effect from February 20, 2025, and will offer refunds to users who still have unspent Coins after shut down.

Despite shutting down its Android presence, Amazon isn’t abandoning its app ecosystem entirely. The App Store will remain active on Fire TV and Fire Tablets, where most of its users are concentrated. A company spokesperson explained that Amazon wants to focus on its own devices, as engagement outside its ecosystem was relatively low.
Amazon’s Appstore had a unique position in the mobile space, offering free app giveaways and serving as the default store for Fire devices. However, it struggled to gain traction compared to Google Play. This move follows Amazon’s decision last year to discontinue its Appstore on Windows, which will also shut down in March 2025.

Although the reasons were explained, it is pretty surprising that Amazon came up with this decision, since the monopoly of the two mobile App Store giants Google and Apple no longer exists. The marketplace has even opened up to consumers following the arrival of alternatives such as Epic Games Store and Aptoide, so the future looks bright even with the fueling competition.
