Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that Industrial Toys, one of its mobile studios is currently working with DICE on a brand new Battlefield game for mobile platforms with a launch date set for the year 2022. In a recent blog post, EA stated that they are currently working on two brand new next-generation Battlefield titles, one for console platforms and the other for a standalone mobile exclusive.
The upcoming title will be a standalone game with new experiences
According to Oskar Gabrielson, DICE general manager, the upcoming Battlefield game will be a standalone title. He further stated,
Make no mistake, this is a standalone game, a completely different game from the one we’re making for console and PC, designed specifically for the mobile platform. It’s being built from the ground up by iToys to make Battlefield-on-the-go a reality, and you can expect a fully-fledged, skill-based experience. This mobile game is now entering a testing period ahead of launching next year, so expect more details to come.
Gabrielson also stated that they’re finally ready to move forward with the Battlefield mobile game after several years of prototyping. Mobile users will be thrilled to know that the upcoming game will be a full-fledged, skill-based game that is currently in testing.
Shooter Genre mobile games are making inroads
Shooter games are arguably the biggest hits on the mobile platform currently and EA is obviously looking to capitalize on that global popularity by bringing its beloved Battlefield to mobile. Other popular titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile enjoyed a colossal launch after racking up more than 100 million downloads in its first week after release in 2019.
Call of Duty: Mobile currently has over 300 Million downloads and EA has seen the creation of a mobile version of popular PC and Console titles— by watching the success of rival Activision. PUBG Mobile which came out in 2018 has also racked up a high amount of downloads over the years by recently hitting 1 billion total downloads in March 2021. EA has launched Apex Legends Mobile as a beta in select regions ahead of a global launch this year banking on the success of this unique and competitive genre of mobile gaming.
When can Battlefield mobile officially release
Battlefield remains a hugely popular shooter and it’s exciting to see the franchise make its highly anticipated debut on mobile devices as a standalone title sometime in 2022. As per today’s announcement, all we know is that the game is entering the testing phase and therefore its release is still a long way off. The hallmarks of a Battlefield game consist of massive player counts, highly destructible environments, and vehicles so we can only hope they bring such elements to the mobile platform as well.
