If you are a fan of the Final Fantasy franchise, well, this news might bring a smile. According to reports, the popular franchise’s fourteenth installment Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is in development under the helm of both Square Enix, the original creators, and Tencent Games.
Update as of August 6, 2024
Well, the rumours have been officially confirmed! The announcement came during the FF14 Eorzean Symphony concert in Guangzhou.
Final Fantasy XIV might be the best pick to revive the franchise on Mobile
From a post by the popular leaker Kurakasis, it was revealed that Square Enix and Tencent are currently developing a mobile version of the popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. Now, the official confirmation has arrived, which takes the excitement a tad bit higher.
This ambitious project marks the continuation of a strategic alliance between the two companies that began in 2018 when they signed a letter of intent, which Square Enix mentioned to enhance its content services worldwide.
Well, the foundation for this project might have been laid back in 2021, when Yosuke Matsuda, then President of Square Enix, confirmed that several joint projects were in progress, with the status being “ongoing communications with Tencent”, although none had been officially announced at that time as he had refused to comment any further on the matter.

If you are not familiar, Final Fantasy XIV, also abbreviated as FFXIV, was first launched in 2010, with a full revision and rerelease in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It combines traditional MMORPG mechanics with Final Fantasy elements. In a huge world, you gain experience points by defeating monsters, crafting, and completing quests, which level up your characters and unlock new abilities.
It would be interesting how the game would come up since Square Enix doesn’t have too good of a lineup in this franchise on mobile with Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis being decent although Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia recently shut down as well. With one of the popular games in the series, it might be the best pick to revive the franchise on mobile platforms.
