Staggering numbers in the beta

League of Legends: Wild Rift is the mobile rendition of the popular MOBA game on PC, known as League of Legends. Much like its PC counterpart, Wild Rift has garnered a massive following in just its first year of release. The game was first released in June of 2020 in Brazil and the Philippines, which is known as an “Alpha launch”. Eventually, the game went into open beta on the 27th of October, 2020 for the first time. The final release of the game came almost a year later on the 8th of October, 2021.

Despite only recently being released in the “final” state, Wild Rift garnered a dedicated player base in the open beta launch itself. Esports tournaments and teams dedicated to Wild Rift have already been set up, which is a clear indication of the game’s popular and competitive nature. The average player growth itself has been staggering, with Wild Rift estimated to have a peak of around 400K players in the last 30 days.

Wild Rift: Reasons of winning at the Golden Joystick Awards 2021

Although some of these attributes are numbers due to the already existing popularity of League of Legends, there is no doubt Wild Rift is a well-made competitive MOBA. It has managed to gain a stronghold in the mobile market which is particularly dominant in Asia and South America. The winner of the coveted “Best mobile game” award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2021, adds further proof to this fact. The award is also impressive as the game has had only just recently been released in its final state. It had been in open beta for nearly an entire year.

Last year, Lego Builder’s Journey did bag the Best Mobile Game of the Year in the year 2020. With mobile gaming continuing to expand slowly, it will be interesting to see which big title bags the coveted prize next year.
